Aldous RH
What should people expect from the show at Lee Rosy’s on Friday 6 June?
Sad Eyes: A quiet show which actually sounds good because nobody has to mix a whole band. Some stand-up from Aldous and some sit-down from Sad Eyes (standing only for key-changes).
How did you meet?
Aldous: A long time ago I played a show at Loughborough University to about ten people. Sad Eyes was one of those people.
What do you play?
Aldous: I play basic rock and pop instruments, guitar, keys, drums, but mostly I sing and write ballads but also sometimes funk, rock and electronic beats.
If you could get anyone in to play with you, who would you choose?
Sad Eyes: Randy Newman. Actually, I would just choose my friends; they won't let me have a live band. After I played my first iPod show they all thought it was the perfect balance of talent and vulnerability, and have banned me from doing anything other than a karaoke set.
What's your favourite of each other’s tracks?
Aldous: My favourite Sad Eyes track is always changing but at the moment it'd have to be a number called World’s Greatest.
Sad Eyes: My favourite is Rad Pitt, from Al's time in Egyptian Hip Hop. For some reason he doesn't acknowledge this himself – he never wants to play it live, and he winces whenever you mention it. But let’s not forget that this is the song that got him onto the NME cool list in 2010. He will never top that, why is he even trying?
Apart from each other, who are your favourite artists/bands at the moment?
Aldous: I've been really enjoying Jerry Paper, Tonstartssbandht, Homeshake, LLION SWYDD, Weyes Blood and Eola. There’s a lot of good things happening at the moment.
Sad Eyes, Waino Skank is a slice of oddball genius. Where did you conjure that up? And will you be wearing a white suit at Lee Rosy's?
Sad Eyes: Thanks. Waino Skank is not my song; it is a cover of a song by Karawik called Aho...Chiwit. I have tried contacting him to ask him if he's cool with me stealing it, but he's never replied. But there's no point trying to find the original because my version is probably the most accurate cover anybody has ever recorded (obviously with badly translated Thai lyrics). I don't know what I'll be wearing at Lee Rosy's yet but it will definitely be better than Aldous' outfit because he dresses like a dead guy.
Sad Eyes
If you had a superpower what would it be?
Aldous: Synaesthesia is a bit of a super power. Kinda wish I had that.
What’s the best dish you cook?
Sad Eyes: A recipe I got off a friend for Toaster Chicken. You skew some raw chicken breasts on a knife, and drop it down into a toaster. Serve with a side of rice and anything else you have in your fridge.
What’s your favourite kind of day?
Aldous: Warm, breezy and easy with some work done but plenty of time for fun.
If the Aldous RH/Sad Eyes tour had a theme tune, what would it be?
You’re playing on Friday in a tea shop, what's your favourite kind of tea?
Sad Eyes: I bought some green tea in Bristol, I think it was called 'Gunpowder' and it was sooo gross, so not that.
What's coming up for you over the next year or so?
Aldous: I don't particularly have any concrete plans at the moment, hopefully finalising a little cassette album quite soon, hopefully finish a full rock 'n' soul studio LP at the end of the year too.
Do you have any advice (good or otherwise) that you'd like to share?
Sad Eyes: Ceeb the Day (Carpe Diem).
Aldous RH and Sad Eyes will be joined by local legend Joey Chickenskin at Lee Rosy’s on Friday 6 June 2014.
