Packed out by an enthusiastic crowd, Hinds’ Rescue Rooms performance was eagerly anticipated by all. The large crowd ranged from those not old enough to buy a pint to the more seasoned of drinkers - it seems everyone is a fan of these Spanish indie-rockers.
Teasingly tantalising the crowd whilst testing their equipment, a man screams from the crowd “Viva Espana!” and this prompts the girls to plunge into their first track, Warning with the Curling. It’s a climatic and commanding opening, with thrashing, expert drumming by Amber Grimbergen. It is an electric opener, and proves the women are worthy of playing even the bigger venues. Not that anyone in Rescue Rooms on Wednesday night was complaining, mind.
Perotte approach’s the crowd screaming “Whaddup Nottingham!” before promising us that “Wednesdays are the new Friday” to the crowd’s laughter (empty meaningless giggles I imagine when they realise that they do, in fact, still have work at nine tomorrow.). Urging the crowd, she roared “Are you ready to have a little bit of fun?”, to which the wild response indicating that yes, yes they bloody were.
Trippy Gum had the crowd dancing along and ‘oohing’ like owls whilst Fat Calmed Kiddos is very reminiscent of cult-teen film 10 Things I Hate About You, but obviously, it’s much cooler, because Hinds are cool. The delicacy of their girly stage voice contrasted with the jagged guitar produces a goose-bumping anthemic chorus.
Next up is Warts with it’s simple, uplifting chords, it sparks some seriously happy grooving from the crowd. By the first notes of Between Cans the crowd are screaming in appreciation and cracking out some serious dance moves, which continues into Walking Home.
“Now’s time for a love song” croons Pernotte as she plunges into the nostalgic Easy accompanied by a fair few couples indulging in some tender slow-dancing… before being shoved into a mosh pit, naturally. This is Nottingham remember. Bamboo proves a popular favourite with the crowd, sparking yet another miniature mosh pit.
Striding back onto stage for the encore they laugh at how they’re missing the NME Awards for this but they “probably won’t win anyway”. Their loss, our gain as Cosails screams “ONE MORE SONG”. Ending the set with the banger Davey Crockett, the band get the crowd going wild to the tracks punchy bass and simple lyrics.
This entire gig has felt like an infectious, indie-rock party which climaxes beautiful as Cosails comes out and sprays champagne all over the crowd. Cos, why the hell not eh?
