The Glaswegian's echo their sermon in Nottingham
Holy Esque

Holy Esque

Whether the audience was there for the artists, or simply to escape the chill, they were primarily treated to Nottinghamshire's Ashfields. The 5-piece act brought their warming brand of indie pop and eased us into the evening, with The Wild being a particular favourite.

Next were London-based band Judas, whose frontman was captivating with his Northern charm and crowd rousing charisma. Their echoing guitar and atmospheric melodies are reminiscent of early U2, and gathered the largest crowd of the night. The fact the lead singer is sibling to celebrity Abbey Clancy maybe be a pointless piece of knowledge, but it does lead me nicely into mentioning Judas' stand out track, Sister.

Finally Holy Esque stepped onto the stage and showed their experience. A tightly performed set-list was only tainted by the excessive echo on the vocals. With probably the most unique sounding voice out of the bands of the night, Pat's singing was muffled by sound effects that weren't complementing the music. The frontman still managed to pull the band through as his passion was the only thing that replicated the charisma of the previous band. Nevertheless, it is their distinct sound that has created the hype surrounding them, and it was clear they were slightly under appreciated by the audience. Maybe an innovative injection of energy could create the spark to get the crowds listening in future performances, but either way let's hope something happens for these boys because originality in music is rapidly disappearing.

Holy Esque performed at The Bodega on Thursday 28 April 2016.
