Baybo Squaybo kicked the night off well creating a relaxed yet fun atmosphere, adding to the sheer talent the lads have when they’re on a stage. I was also introduced to a genius idea involving a piece of laminated card with the bands name on it stuck to a microphone. Not only does this mean you can’t use the excuse of “I forgot what their name was” to not go and give them a like on Facebook, but there is a code in the corner that you scan with your phone, and it instantly sends you to their Facebook page.

Samuel J Lawrence was next up to the stage. As he was a last minute replacement, it would be easy to assume he was the least anticipated of the night, but in fact he owned the stage as well as any of the four/five man bands did. With the majority of his set being original songs, and finishing with a song by Paulo Nutini – which took me half of the song to figure out, so it must have been a ruddy good cover – people were tapping their toes and even singing along by the end.

Next to grace the stage was Vanity Box who brought a fair few supporters with them. As their popularity has grown quite rapidly there was a sense of expectancy on their shoulders, which they certainly lived up to. It’s become the norm now for this group of four to deliver a polished performance, but they seem to be handling the pressure – if there is any. The sweat pouring off their faces by the end of their set just proved how much they enjoy being on stage making music, and with the whoops and claps from the crowd the whole way through, it was clear their enthusiasm was passed on to everyone in the room.

Last but far from least it was time for Suspect Alibi to close the night. Having brought even more people with them the room was pretty full by the time these guys came on. They may be young on paper, but they certainly don’t seem young when they’re on stage. With each member having their own quirky identity, it’s hard not to feel involved when they perform. Not only did they smash their set and get a group of lads at the front dancing their hearts out, but they turned true professionals when they granted the shouting fans an encore.

The gig felt undoubtedly a success, with some great live music and an awesome atmosphere for just a fiver. All we can hope is that this won’t be Prisma’s last live music event.

Suspect Alibi, Vamity Box, Samuel J Lawrence and Baybo Squaybo performed at Spanky Van Dykes on Thursday 10 July 2014.
