Neat14 Music: MuHa

Friday 23 May 2014
reading time: min, words
Eastern European folk at CAST as part of Neat14 on Saturday 24 May

So, who plays what in the band?
Iryna sings, plays guitar, berimbau, hurdy-gurdy, harmonica and jew's harp.  Nikki plays cajon and bongos.  Louise plays bass and recites Kathak bols.  Dmitry plays guitar.

Can you describe your band in 3 words?
Contemporary folk band.

You’re playing CAST at Nottingham Playhouse on 24 May, as part of the neat14 festival.  What can people expect from the show?
A fusion of the melodic beauty of Eastern European folklore, North Indian Kathak rhythms, Cuban beats, Western European influence and original lyrics from Hindi to old Russian and modern Ukrainian.

What other neat14 events are you planning to check out?
The European Organ Recital sounds amazing.  Also, a production from the Belarus Free Theatre is an event not to miss.

What’s your most memorable gig so far?
Last summer we played at Bestival on the Isle of White.  It was the biggest festival we ever played, definitely the most unusual too.

What's your favourite song of all time?
I don't have a favourite song as such.  I listen to a lot of different music from classical Indian music to authentic groups from Eastern European countries, from western alternative rock to Nottingham  hip hop.  If music is honest and genuine, it has an ability to find a direct way to people's hearts and to become a favorite piece of music for some time – until you find the next great piece of music that will speak to you.

What is coming up for you over the next year?
We are finishing the work on our new album to release this summer and we are looking forward to sharing it with our audience.

Do you have any advice that you'd like to share?
Nottingham is a vibrant cultural city with a lot of events on offer for various tastes and budgets all year round.  Take an interest in what's going on, if you still have a TV - switch it off and get out to see an event you like or that is simply close to your home to enrich your life and to meet new friends.

MuHa perform as part of Neat14 at CAST on Saturday 24 May 2014.
