If you wanna learn more about the dangers of fracking to environments and communities, get yersen down to Beeston. It's potentially blood-curdling stuff, but fear not. The fantastically dedicated people at FrackFree Notts have been putting their heads together to work out how we can keep destruction at bay and, with the help of The Beestonian Film Club, are hosting a screening of a documentary that will reveal all. On top of that, there are more film shorts, a Q&A session, discussions and guest speakers. A meal even comes included in the ticket price too, nom. Book your place via t[email protected] and be sure to attend the FrackFree Notts meeting at The Peacock the following day.

Bombay Talkies
Devi is a classic sixties Indian arthouse film, and Talvin Singh is recreating its sounds and sights, with a twist, in celebration of 101 years of Indian cinema. He’s brought together some of the most talented acts in the business to create a fusion of film and live music, laced with his expertise as one of the most influential people in British Asian music. By mixing up classical Indian and contemporary sounds, Talvin is sure to stir up something inspirational, wrapping up the evening with his tabla skills in a classic duet with sitar player Roopa Panesar.
Monday 16 June, 8pm, £20/£22, Djanogly Theatre, Lakeside

Phlexx 002
A few weeks ago, Phlexx Records brought a mental party to town and it was so good they're throwing another. Brace yourselves for a messy one because the drinks are dirt cheap and, same as last time, the evening takes live performances and the skillest DJs, rolling them all up into a night of the highest grade. Some of the Midlands’ finest artists will be there to charm earbuds, including Leah Sinead, Sabrina Sandhu and J Gold. In terms of ones and twos, DJ Fish, Erbal T, Fel Dem and DJ Kidda Beats will be taking over the stage to deliver a mish mash of house, d’n’b, reggae and grime. Splendid.
Thursday 19 June, 9pm, free, Nirvana

The course lasts three weeks on consecutive Monday evenings. Come on, not like you do owt else on a Monday night. 'New book smell' is almost certainly guaranteed.

Golden Fleece Relaunch
The Fleece has gone and had a fresh lick of paint, spruced itself up a bit, put on its best suit, and is relaunching itself into outer space this weekend, with gigs stretching across every night from Thursday to Sunday. Those lovely lot at Farmyard and I’m Not From London have come together to bring acts to tickle every fancy in the city. If blues is your thing, then you’ll love Thursday and Friday; if hip hop’s more your game then get on it Saturday; and if you like all the music this world has to offer, get on down on Sunday - there’s a bit of something for everyone.
Thursday 19 - Sunday 22 June, 8:30pm, free, The Golden Fleece

Bamalamasingsong
If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that we all love a bit of a sing song. We love shouting along to Here I Go Again at the top of our lungs, but we don’t always want to be the laughing stock that gets up on stage at karaoke. The solution is simple, group karaoke. The Bamalama band play all your favourite rock hits with a massive screen with the lyrics on, so no singing the wrong verse. Everybody gets to have a good owd fashioned singalong, and there’ll be so many people going for it that you won’t have to hear your own voice. Win win.
Friday 20 June, 8pm, £5, Rescue Rooms

Refugee Week
Nottingham Beyond Borders are hosting a week of activities in loads of venues all over the city, with a nod towards all the people in the world who’ve been displaced through war, famine and persecution. The theme this year is ‘Our Shared Future,’ focussing particularly on young refugees through eye-opening film screenings in Five Leaves Bookshop, New Art Exchange, Central Library and Broadway, as well as world music events, discussions and loads more creative happenings. Have a look on the website to find out the full details, and get down to some events that will make a positive difference to the community.

Vintage and Antiques Fair
There are plenty of nifty vintage and antique vendors all about Notts, but it’s a bit of an effort for the lazier Nottinghamians among us to travel between them all. We should be thankful for Cobden Chambers and Hopkinson Gallery then, cos twice a month they bring a load of vintage stalls together. The first weekend of the month at Hopkinson, and the third at Cobden. There’s loads of fancy little things to peruse, from frock stalls to stuff for your backyard. Add to that an accompanying soundtrack stretching from the twenties to the eighties, and you’ve got yourself a proper decent shopping experience.
Friday 20 - Saturday 21 June, 10am, free, Cobden Chambers

The Kimberley Jam
We love a good pub, we love a good celebration; and we love good music. Luckily for us, some bright spark has brought all of ‘em together, all in the name of charity. Yep, down in Kimberley this weekend, you get to have a pint, a bit of a twist and shout, and help out The Ryan Lee Trust too. If you’re unfamiliar, the RLT help kids that have been diagnosed with brain tumours and other kinds of cancer. So you can enjoy loads of different acts, from cover bands, to comedy bands; and feel good inside knowing you’re helping out a proper worthy cause.
Saturday 21 June, 3pm, free, Various venues in Kimberley

Bike Surgery
Right, the sunshine’s poking his head out. No excuses now. Wipe them cobwebs of the old Chopper, get it wheeled down and gussied up. Nottingham Hackspace, the gems that they are, are hosting a workshop where you can learn how to check your pedals of goodness for any unbeknown calamities that might be looming. You’ll also be taught how to make easy fixes and get him cleaned up without needing to shout at the bleeder for trapping your fingers. Ran by Dave Anning from 2 Wheels Better, the surgery will provide more or less everything you need and if not, Rock’n’Roll Bikes is handily sitting just round the corner.
Saturday 21 June, 1pm – 4pm, £5, Nottingham Hackspace

Gedling Book Festival
If you like good thumb every now and again, you’re not alone. This weekend lends the chance for all the readers and writers in the city to get together and explore the world of words. There’s all sorts of stuff to be cracking on with; discussions with best-selling authors, creative writing workshops, kiddies’ puppet and magic shows, refreshment stalls, arts and crafts, the chance to talk about your career, and so much more. It’s worth visiting the New Writers UK website to check out who’s popping up when, or simply turn up, be inspired and get scribbling.

Future Sound of  Nottingham
We’re pretty sure most Nottingham musicians have dreamed of playing Rock City, but it’s not the easiest thing to find your way up onto that huge stage. Thanks to Nusic, six lucky musicians will find themselves on the same stage that legends like Nirvana have graced. You lot all placed your votes online, and now the finalists have been revealed. They’ll be treated like rockstars, they’ll feel like rockstars, and you lucky sods get to see them perform for free. The acts will be judged not just by industry experts, but by crowd reaction as well - so make sure you go mental for your favourites, and they could find themselves opening Splendour to a few people. You know, 20,000 people. Not many.
Sunday 22 June, 6.30pm, free, Rock City
