Bruxism

Bruxism
The fellas over at Phlexx Records are taking over our city’s entertainment, one branch at a time. Having conquered the messy Maze nights, they’ve decided to try their hand at art exhibitions, under the oh so fabulous title - Phlexxibitions. The first artist to display their work is Kelsey Bryan, who specialises in blackwork pointillism to present her work that usually presents themes of dreams and death. Titled Bruxism - which literally means the excessive grinding of the teeth - the event is free, there’ll be food, and even some free  beer. Yep, you heard us right, free beer. The Phlexx lads sure do know how to throw a good party. If you fancy gerrin’ a bit cultured, give it a go. It’s
Tuesday 28 April, 7pm, free, The Art Cafe

Notts Women Runners
Once you become a mummy, your days become an endless slog of nappies, bottles and calming baby playlists. Not only that, you’re bombarded with images of ‘yummy mummies’ in magazines, and endless diet plans that will have you nibbling on peanuts for weeks in order to ‘bounce back’ to your pre-pregnancy body, completely disregarding the trauma your body has just gone through. Well, to that, we say, sod ‘em. If you’re looking for a way to ease yourself back into a healthy exercise programme, but don’t want to sacrifice time with your young one to do so, get involved with the ‘Mum Run’ - a buggy friendly run for mothers who want to get back into the swing of things. Pack yer sprog into the pushchair and get your trainers on, ladies.
Thursday 30 April, 12.45pm, Castle Boulevard

Women on the air...

Women Into Broadcasting and Women into Music
The wonderful women over at the WEA Nottingham branch of Women Leading Learning are at it again. Bringing women in and around Nottingham two courses designed to broaden their knowledge of the media industry. They’re inviting women over the age of nineteen to take part in their weekly courses, educating them on the ins and outs of both radio broadcasting (Thursday 30 April, The Lofthouse) and women in music (Wednesday 6 May, Antenna). Childcare and travel costs are often covered by the organisation, as well as the majority of course costs - the emphasis being that no matter what your income, you should be able to learn in a friendly, safe, women only environment. As part of the course, you’ll get the chance to visit BBC Nottingham, create your own music, and to meet some cracking people from the industry. For more information, call course tutor, Ros, on 07850524319, or if you’re sold already, just pop along to the course.
Thursday 30 April, Wednesday 6 May, 11am, mostly free, The Lofthouse, Antenna

Derby Film Festival
We know this one’s not Nottingham, and while it may look like we’re crossing over enemy lines and bigging up our sheep-romancing cousins, we’re actually informing you of a festival that’s gonna include a ton of homegrown Notts talent. Standout film of the festival will no doubt be the short Beverley starring a host of Nottingham talent from the Television Workshop, including Vicky McClure, Kieran Hardcastle and the young Sennia Nanua. The film will be screened as part of the Eat My Shorts short film competition, in which the winners are based upon audience reaction - get yersens down to make sure your Hood Town homies take home the crown. Grin and bear the city for the day, and support your local talent.
Friday 1 - Sunday 10 May, various times, various prices, The Quad, Derby

Free Comic Book Day
It’s been a long one, this month. Almost five weeks, in fact, and if you, like us, are feeling the pinch and your wallet is bleedin’ nippy from the lack of padding, then you need not wail on yer sofa for much longer, folks! Nip out, and bag yersen a free comic book courtesy of the lovely folk at Forbidden Planet International on Friar Lane. There’s gonna be competitions and giveaways, and you can even take part online if you can’t be arsed to leave your sofa. You’d best get down there early if you wanna grab the best deals, as the stock is expected to don capes and literally fly off the shelves.

The only place in town to offer you a salt beef beigel while you pump up your bike tyre and peruse their extensive vinyl collection, are screening a film sure to reinstate the spirit of unity and community into our souls. And all for free. The Spirit of ‘45 depicts life in Britain during the war years, and is sure to pierce the hearts of even the coldest of folk. While it’s a free event, you’re very much encouraged to sample some of the craft beer that’s available, and it’s expected to be a busy night, so you’d best get down early to bag yersens a comfy seat. DJ Vinyl on the decks...

Kold Chillin
It’s the only place in Nottingham where you can find the entire phone directory in the loos. The rockers that reside there are bringing you their monthly vinyl DJ night. With a strict ‘no door tax’ policy, the evening won’t ruin your wallet for the coming month, and you can gorge yourself on whiskey and lager until the cows come home. Why not pop down a little earlier and sample the scran that Jared’s kitchen has got to offer - the pulled pork burger is one tasty morsel you’ve just gotta try. It’ll be a late one, so it’s a good job you’ll have the next day off to soothe your aching head and burst ear drums. Archive and Lethargy are among the resident DJs spinning their stuff on the decks.
Saturday 2 May, 8.30pm, free, The Old Angel

The Invisible Orchestra
The incredible lot that are The Invisible Orchestra are coming together once again and this time you get to witness their fitness in the Masonic Hall - no funny handshakes required at the door. The 32-piece orchestra combine soul, punk and dirty funk into their big band sound, and have collaborated with contemporary big timers, Percy Dread, Natalie Duncan and Harleighblu. Supporting them in their head-rattling performance is none other than our very own hip hop legend, Scorzayzee, plus the fastest fingered man in Notts, Mr Switch. Ooh, the musical gods aren’t half spoiling you lot this month.
Saturday 2 May, 7.30pm, £15, Masonic Hall

Like bein' at 'ome, but yer out...

The Outriders
The human jukeboxes are back at it again, with their full band swing and open track list. The power is firmly in your hands, as the song choices are up to you. The atmosphere in The Lofthouse is second to none, and owners Trish and Ian, have succeeded in creating a living room-esque feel to the place. Often serving homemade chicken and vegetable curry for a meagre £2.50 and doubles for £3, you can indulge without breaking the bank. Recline on a Paul Smith fabric clad sofa beneath twinkly fairy lights, or rock yer socks off on the dancefloor to the live music you’ve picked yersen. It’s a proper family atmosphere, with some of the best Saturday night vibes in the city. Big win.
Saturday 2 May, 8pm, free, The Lofthouse

Everywhere Festival
Organised by the genius guys over at Dollop, this year’s Everywhere Festival is set to blow yer brains out yer ears. Hannah Wants, Friend Within and Hot Since 82 are just three of the artists headlining an all-day affair of house music that’s deeper than how you’ll feel during the next day’s comedown. If Stealth, the 66th best club on the planet, ain’t enough to get those toes twitching, the sets are being hosted across multiple venues. The entire city will be hijacked by infectious new electronic talent and DJ legends. With little competition, except from the big festivals, it’s kinda like Christmas for anybody who loves house music. And it’s all from the comfort of yer home town. Whether you’re a shape thrower, a shuffler, or just like a good ol’ rave, Everywhere is gurner be off the hook.
Sunday 3 May, 8pm, £38.50, Multiple venues
