There are some people who are brought into this world for a short time, to brighten a tiny corner of our planet in a way that only they can. One of those people, was Amy Winehouse. Her soulful voice and boundless musical talent was second to none, and her bright, effervescent personality was appreciated by all who knew her. This week sees the premiere of the film, directed by Asif Kapadia, that attempts to remove the media stigma from the songstress. Good old Broadway are gonna be screening the London Gala premiere, with red carpet footage beforehand, and a proper decent question and answer session afterwards. Pack your tissues, cos it’s sure to be an emotional ride.

Weaving Week
Ever wanted to kit yourself out with a wardrobe full of fresh woven garmz, created by your own fair hands? Well now’s your chance. The wonderful Hannah Waldron, who specialises in telling stories with her woven creations, and has worked with the likes of Paul Smith and the V&A Museum, will be hosting the workshops, learning you good and proper in the art of weaving. It is a little pricey, but you’ll be there for a good three hours, and afternoon tea is chucked in with the price. Sessions will run until the end of the week, but they are expected to sell out pretty sharpish, so you best get your booking shoes on, head over to the website and sort your place.

Objects of Use: ‘I’ve Never Played...’ Carcassone
Rough Trade ain’t half treatin’ your nerd brains here, ‘Lioners. Activate the strategic component of your thinking cap and clear your Thursday evening schedule in preparation to take over the French town of Carcassone. The town is famous for its military buildings and fortresses, and you’ll be attempting to populate the town with your little wooden objects. We couldn’t think of anything better to do mid-week, plus, it gets all those pesky world domination desires up and outta your mind quicker than you can say salt beef beigel. All ages and abilities are welcome.

We’re proper excited about this one. Forget going out and getting bladdered at your usual watering hole, filled with all the other humdrum folks who don’t have nowt better to do. Grab the camp chairs out the shed, pack yourselves a picnic, and hop on the number 30 bus to Wollo park for an evening at the opera. Watch the Royal Opera’s Don Giovanni on the big screen as the sun sets over Nottingham’s best loved park. Take a bottle of vino and a couple of strawberries and you’ve got the date of a lifetime sorted for this weeks lucky Tinder match. And it won’t cost you nowt.

Mimm Secret Sessions
In general, we’re pretty good at keeping secrets round here, especially when it comes to secret party places. The front runner of all things schtum, is Mimm. The clothing store come art collective come most spectacular party planners on the planet are planning another one of their secret soirees this week. In collaboration with Congi and Ink Soup, the independent brand are presenting an album that comes hand in hand with a graphic novel that’s been created in our fair city. Tickets are limited and a hot commodity, so you’d best get online right now. It’ll be a right ode mucky knees up, so it‘s probably best you don’t plan anything until at least 7pm on Saturday.

You’ve gorra love a gallery opening at ‘Tempreh. They pull out all the stops to make sure you have a cracker of a night - from a few free bevs, delicious Cafe.Bar. morsels to try, and even live music from Ghost Culture to have you partyin’ way into a summer's eve. But it’s not all about the party, there’ll be some mighty fine art work for you to peruse, courtesy of Pablo Bronstein. He’s picked 62 marvellous works from Chatsworth to be displayed in our city for the next couple of months, including pieces by Rembrandt, Delft porcelain and the coronation chairs of William IV and Queen Adelaide. Oo-er. Go and have a goose, and have a couple beers while you’re at it. A proper cultured Friday eve.

Once seen as a sport reserved for those who holiday in St Tropez and dine on the finest cucumber sarnies of a summer afternoon, the wooden batted sport is coming to the masses, this weekend. Pop on down to Highfields and have a lark knocking weighted balls through metal loops using only a wooden baton. If you master the art in a jiffy, you could even win a free place on the ‘Learn To Play’ course starting the following Tuesday. Get daan Vickeh Market and grab all the cucumbers you can lay your hands on, make a batch of the traditional sarnie and have yourself a picnic while you’re down there. Get you right in the swing of things. Get it?

In celebration of the American Independence Day – kind of – the quirky chaps at Hackspace are asking you to come in numbers and make stuff. Any kind of crap that you can make out of other bits of crap will more than suffice, and they’re even gonna offer you prizes in exchange for all your hard work. One lucky hacker will be the recipient of the Nicolas Coppola Award for Cinematic Genius and Flair, awarded to the person with the best use of Nicolas Cage in their work. In-bloody-credible. Following the making affair, they’ll be screening some proper American films for you to see your evening in with. If this isn’t right up your alley, well, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. New Mayor
Hear ye, hear ye! There’s a new mayor in town, and she’s about to be sworn in (traditional jargon for ‘she’s got the job’) o the position this weekend. To celebrate our girl, Councillor Jackie Morris’ success, the castle are putting on a whole host of stuff for you to do. There’ll be free entry to the castle for the day, a medieval fancy dress competition, and you can have a pop at archery for just a measly pound a pop. Ain’t they treatin’ us, eh? You’ll be sure to spot Robin Hood there, narrating a play about our city, and the castle’s mascot Hood will be there an’ all. Round up the sprogs and jog on over. There'll be photo ops galore.
