Celebratin' women all day, errryday...

International Women’s Day
Women. You incredible beings. Fingers in all the pies, generally bossing life. This month, along with the rest of the world, we’ve a whole day to celebrate just how effin’ awesome you are. All that you achieve, create and conquer is to be celebrated in true Notts fashion, with a selection of events across the city centre. Rough Trade are opening their doors to the DIY Poets for their Women Say… Stuff event, where all female and female-identifying poets are invited to hop on stage to share their poetry. Headline slots include Michelle Mother Hubbard, Emteaz Hussain and Panya Banjoko. A right wordy celebration starting at 8pm. Be you woman or not, stick yer head in. Nottingham Trent University are offering another affair, opening a dialogue on women refugees with a series of discussions led by experts in the fields of gender, migration, and the rights of refugee and asylum seekers. Speakers will include Dr Leah Bassel, Dr Olga Bailey and Dr Helen O’Nions, and you can catch them at the Newton Building from 6.30pm. Plus, Nottingham Women’s Centre are celebrating all day with everything from storytelling to boxing. Proper.

Nusic Workshop
The music maestros over at Nusic have got endless stores of industry knowledge piled up in their brains. To make the world a generally better place, they’re gonna share their pools of musical intelligence with up-and-coming Notts musicians and their managers. Workshop sessions from Kate Holder - Radio 1 and 1xtra producer, Radio X boss Mike Walsh, and Notts TV presenter Nicola Beswick are heading over to Antenna to fill you in on how best to get media exposure for your music. Bring along a copy of your latest EP so you can lob it at ‘em before they even start talking. Or maybe wait till they’ve finished, you know, whatever you think’s best.

Ey up, Mr Monch...

Pharoahe Monch
We love a good hip hop night and this one promises to be a bleddy corker. After bringing through Method Man and Redman, Ghostface Killah, and countless other legends to Nottingham, Dealmaker and its spinoff company Gangsta Wraps are delivering Pharoahe Monch to the Rescue Rooms stage. With a rapping career envied by up-and-comers and established names alike, our Monch is set to destroy the place. Gawd only knows what’s gonna happen when Simon Says drops. In support of the US stalwart, our very own VVV are joining in on the tearing up. That’s Nottingham’s Cappo, Juga-Naut and Vandal Savage in their very own bleddy group, don’tcha know. Local meets international. We’re into it. Bag yersen a ticket before they sell out. .

Guide to How the Internet Works
The world wide web has been about since the eighties, and yet still, some of us haven’t gorra clue what happens to those embarrassing photos we insist our mates delete after a Saturday night on the razz. On hand to fill us in on the inner workings of the internet, is the tiniest technology studio, Buckley Williams. they’ll be teaching us exactly how the powers that be are able to track our movements, interests and daily goings on, all through a simple web browser search. Sound a bit scary? You best get down to find out more then, hadn’t you.

Make Tomorrow Yours
This week is National Careers Week, and this year, it falls in the same week as International Women’s Day. Taking full advantage of this coincidence is charity Visible Women, who seek to inspire young women to enter male-dominated careers. They’re teaming up with local digital agency, Distinction, and hosting an evening of talks from professionals including Distinction’s own digital marketer, Grace Mik, Union Square’s marketing director, and Jocelyn Spence – visiting Researcher in Performative Experience Design at the University of Nottingham. While the event is targeted at women, it’s free for all to attend, just book your place online.

I'm your Venus...

Showgirls 
Often in the LeftLion office, our daily grind is interrupted by a heavy r ‘n’ b bassline, and the squeaking of legs on poles from our upstairs neighbours, Venus Pole Dancing. This week, they’re headlining Oceana, with a showcase of their talents and work over the last ten years. That’s right, they’re celebrating ten years of boosting women’s confidence with an all out show. A whole night of fun, not only will there be routines form their students to make you go, "How the hell?!" and "...Wow!", Lady Burlesque will be doing her thing on stage, and the night will be compered by stand-up comedienne, Carmen Ali.

By Heck, they're back...

Heck
They started life as Baby Godzilla, and after a legal hoo-ha over their name – a mardy bogger of a lizard was not chuffed to find out some ruffians from Hoodtown were appropriating his name – they now go by the polite exclamation of Heck. What isn’t polite is the manner in which they invade your ears and brain. But who wants polite when it comes to grinding, hardcore rock? They’re about to go on a merry old tour of the country to celebrate the release of the debut LP, Instructions, and they’re starting the whole thing on the day of the release, right here in their hometown. They’re promising it’ll be a night to remember, so take your earplugs and a sturdy pair of shoes. You’re gonna need both.

MEME and Big Faces
It’s with a heavy heart that we bid a fond farewell to The Music Exchange this month. To celebrate all they have done for the city and wider community, MEME and Big Faces have teamed up with Bohunk to hosting an evening of proper wacky disc-jockeying. Hot Toddy of Crazy P, Andy Riley of Inland Knights and Beane from Soul Buggin’ will be on hand to deliver some funkeh tunes and some proper bassline jams. There’ll probably be a fair few naughty words thrown in for good measure. Some of the proceeds raised will be passed Framework’s way, so it’s a proper giving affair.

Print Your Own Poster
Sundays can be a bit of a drag. The usual rigmarole of waking with a fuzzy head from last night’s antics, followed by a Sunday dinner lovingly cooked by your mam just ain’t gonna cut it another week in a row. Do sommat different, and pack yourself off to Malt Cross for a right creative day. Get right mucky with the ink as you learn how to use a letterpress to create lino cut images for your very own poster. You can take it home and show your mother in the evening as you tuck in to the roast she’s plated up for you. Cos you know, some things just aren’t worth missing.
