Following its recent premiere at the Quad in Derby, impressive short film Shelter will be heading across the country in a variety of domestic film festivals over the Summer. Directed by Tom Vardy, the post-apocalyptic thriller was shot beneath the streets of Nottingham City Centre in a hidden World War II bomb shelter.
The eleven minute sci-fi drama, which is set against the backdrop of eighties Britain, centers around Jenny (Sarah Wynne Kordas), who has taken refuge in the titular shelter in the aftermath of the unnamed disaster. The psychological effects of her endless days of solitude become increasingly apparent, with her only company the continually playing four minute warning over her radio.
Her enforced isolation is interrupted one day by a mysterious knock on the door, forcing her to face a decision that puts her survival at risk.
Shot on a Black Magic 4k production camera, Shelter is aesthetically striking, with an excellent sense of pace and constant building of tension to its crescendo – helped by a fittingly eerie score. The final product is made all the more impressive with the knowledge that Shelter was made over three days with a budget of just £800.
Director Vardy said; “All of the team’s hard work and vision have paid off immensely. It wouldn’t have been possible without this crew of talented, passionate filmmakers: director of photography Matt Sharratt, producer Deshan Sureshkumar, editor Jake Lee and grader Pim Meijer. They all pulled together in a refreshing way to go beyond and to create. Filming in the contemporary city of Nottingham was a decision that paid off very well, being a treasure in itself with tons of other hidden gems, as well as a community that thrive to be creative and to help others.”
