Wrestling fans are used to seeing their larger-than-life heroes getting down to business in sports halls or nightclubs, but in a world first the “Battle of Nottingham” will be contested in the renowned Nottingham Contemporary art gallery - a venue more accustomed to chin-stroking than chin-music. Chaz Wright talks to Sam West, producer of the exciting new promotion Wrestling Resurgence, to find out more about Spandex Ballet...

Weavers Wine Merchants Have Been Delving Into Gin Distilling
Sun 26 Aug 2018Last month saw the city’s bars, cafes, shops and salons pitted against each other in a battle to be crowned Nottingham’s Independent Business of the Year 2018; the tastily executed offerings of Bar Iberico took the ultimate crown and the restaurant skipped off merrily into their tapas wonderland. The awards have been championing those brave enough to stand up against corporate giants for a few years now, and this time there was a new Special Achievement award up for grabs, taken by none other than Nottingham’s wine-merchant stalwarts, Weavers…

Get Down to Brass: Nottingham's Jazz Scene
Fri 24 Aug 2018Jazz has been around for over a century now; the exact date disputed but its birthplace is unanimously agreed on: New Orleans. African-American communities of this vibrant, palpable city kicked off the magical creation in the early 1900s, and an entirely new music genre formed. After a period of being frowned upon by many, it became the soundtrack for twenties America, otherwise known as the Jazz Age. These days, the West African rhythms, blues, ragtime and European military band infusions have danced their way across the globe, and into the corners of cities like ours. But what of Nottingham jazz? Where did it all start, and what’s going on in the scene today?
Notts Councillor in Proper Epic Trek
Thu 23 Aug 2018Here in Notts we don’t do things by half; Arif Qureshi’s taxi is trashed by yobs, you lot club together to buy him a new cab. Trump pops over the pond and Notts rocks up and performs a mass conga in protest. The city is reported to have one of the worst reading rates in the country and we enlist Dolly Parton. OK, that last part might be a slight exaggeration but, having said that, the head of Nottingham City Council is leading by example and embarking on a colossal challenge to give our kids access to free books.

Review: Clean Yoga in the Arboretum
Thu 23 Aug 2018Over the past twelve months, the country has entered a frenzy over plastic waste and its effect on our oceans. More than ever before, folk are constantly consuming, and looking for ways to reduce our plastic usage, myself included. I have appointed myself as LeftLion’s official sustainability nut, and get eyes rolled at me on a daily basis for complaining about the plastic water bottles in the office fridge or for kicking off about the recycling.
When I heard about Clean Yoga, I was really pleased to find yet another group in Nottingham trying to make a positive difference. Victoria Douglas and Hannah Appleton are two local fitness instructors who share a love for both mindfulness and the environment. At each session, they lead an outdoor yoga practice followed by a clean up of the area…
