Leap of Faith: Nottingham Residents Who Have Left Their Religion Behind
Fri 23 Apr 2021Between 2011 and 2019, the number of British people who identified as being non-religious increased by a staggering 46%. To put that in context, that made them the fasting growing group in the country and, with the new census currently being undertaken, that number is expected to grow further. While being an atheist isn’t quite the taboo it once was in an increasingly secular country, for some people, turning away from god can pose huge mental, physical and spiritual challenges. We talked to Notts residents Tony Challis, the President of Nottingham Secular Society, and Amir X (whose real name has been retracted at his request), a former Muslim, to find out how difficult it was to leave religion behind…

Next Gen Movement: The Group Behind Nottingham's Anti-Racism Protest
Wed 08 Jul 2020The murder of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis sent reverberations around the world, including Nottingham, where thousands of people descended on the Forest Recreation Ground in a show of communal strength against systemic racism on Sunday 7 June. The protests were peaceful, but the anger, frustration and passion for forcing change – in real terms – was overwhelming. Behind the protests were three young women, friends Shan Vincent, Tyla Henrique-White and Janelle Brown who have since formed Next Gen Movement, a project aimed at empowering young people to make sure the fight against racism continues to be impactful. We caught up with Janelle to find out more, and discover where they plan to go from here…

NHS @ 70: The Organisation Collecting Your Stories, Memories and Opinions of the NHS
Sat 16 May 2020
Up until recently, it’s fair to say that many of us have been guilty of taking the NHS for granted. But as the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc on the country, stretching the health service to its absolute limits, you can’t help but feel that, as a nation, we’re finally starting to truly understand the value of what we’re lucky to have. One organisation was well-ahead of the curve on the appreciation front, however, as the NHS at 70: The Story of Our Lives project has been collating stories, memories and experiences of the NHS for a few years, and 2020 has seen them focus their attention on the East Midlands. Outlawed: The True Story Behind Nottingham's Craziest Action Film
Thu 13 Jun 2019Seven years, over three hundred crewmembers, one Chinook helicopter, no budget and two directors learning how to make a film as they went along. For anyone that has worked in the Nottingham film industry over the last decade, the production of Outlawed took on something of a mythological status. Everyone knew someone that had been involved at some point, many doubted it would ever get completed, and the stories of firearms, exploding buildings and pissed off Council officials quickly became the stuff of legend. With the film now picked up for distribution, including a Netflix deal in the United States and a worldwide DVD release, we caught up with co-directors Adam Collins and Luke Radford to find out the truth about the most insane film production in Nottingham’s history...
