‘Hejira’ is a 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterful musical works of Joni Mitchell, mostly from the late ‘70s – her ‘jazz period’. Hejira is fronted by the brilliant vocalist and guitarist Hattie Whitehead who, in her own way, captures the poise, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals - as well as her stylistic mannerisms on guitar.
We are delighted to welcome Hejira to Jazz Steps at the Bonington. Join us to savour Hejira’s moving live performance of Joni’s iconic songs that embody a potent interplay of poetic lyrics and jazz-inflected music. The band’s tour gigs have been a sell-out - so book tickets early to avoid disappointment!
Rolling Stone Magazine says, “In the continual reordering of the popular-music canon, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Joni Mitchell‘s complex, emotive, cerebral, ever-evolving music is ranking higher than ever.” Rolling Stone Magazine. As if to reinforce this, BBC Sounds has a 6-part series the Joni Mitchell Storycoinciding with Joni’s 80th birthday that explores her pioneering work that changed music forever.
Hejira focus on music from Joni’s outstanding album ‘Shadows And Light’, a live recording that featured legendary jazz artists from that period: Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker, Don Alias and Jaco Pastorius. This was the culmination of her ‘jazz period’, whose other album titles included: ‘Hejira’, ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’, ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ and ‘Mingus’ which include jazz luminaries Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.
