1999: the Sixth Sense

A huge box office smash on release (the second biggest film of 1999 after The Phantom Menace, also screening this month), The Sixth Sense launched the career of then-little-known director M. Night Shyamalan. Starring the brilliantly heartbreaking Haley Joel Osment as Cole, the nine-year-old boy who claims he can see dead people; Toni Collette as his mother, very much on the edge of what she can handle; and Bruce Willis as the child psychologist Cole confides in.
