Noted today for the now legendary performance of Jon Voight as the country boy turned would-be hustler Joe Buck, and Dustin Hoffman as down-at-heel con-man Ratso Rizzo, Midnight Cowboy is widely celebrated as one of the most ground-breaking American films of the 1960s. Many considered James Leo Herlihy’s novel unfilmable due to its explicit content but this New Hollywood classic remains the only X-rated film to win the Oscar for best picture.
