When she is cast as the prima ballerina in a new work entitled ‘The Red Shoes’, eager young dancer Victoria Page is driven to breaking point and beyond by the charismatic but obsessive impresario Boris Lermontov. Powell and Pressburger, aided by Brian Easdale’s score and Jack Cardiff’s sumptuous Technicolor photography, create an atmospheric piece of cinema that is as sinister as it is magical. –BFI
