A double act with John Lucas and Rory Waterman, talking about their new collections of essays, then interviewing each other.
John Lucas’s essays are on people he’s known, including school teachers, jazz musicians, writers, “plain ordinary folk”, and Brian Clough – “Cloughie”, the legendary figure who belongs to the history of Nottingham, Lucas’s adopted city, where he has lived for the last sixty years.
John Lucas is a poety, novelist, critic, essayist, jazz musician and publisher (at Shoestring Press). His books for Five Leaves include A Brief History of Whistling, The Radical Twenties and Next Year Will Be Better: England in the 1950s. His books published by others include his account of living in Athens, 92 Achernon Street and The Awkward Squad: Rebels in English Cricket.
“Only a dedicated sourpuss could fail to be swept along by Luca’s zest and intelligence” The Spectator
Rory Waterman reviews poetry for the Times Literary Supplement, co-edits poetry publisher New Walk and teaches Modern and Contemporary Literature at Nottingham Trent University.
His four collections of poetry, all Carcanet, were launched at Five Leaves, the latest being Come Here to This Gate. Rory has also published several critical books on poetry and poets.
Not surprisingly, many of his essays stem from his bookish interests, but it’s never just about the book.
