Respite Care and Short Breaks for Children with Additional Needs
At IMPACD CIC, we offer respite care and short breaks tailored for children with additional needs. Our successful programme has been running for six months, providing a vital service to children and their families. Every Saturday morning, our sessions give parents and caregivers a half-day respite while their children engage in enriching activities in a safe and supportive environment. Our sessions have been described as “"outstanding”" by professionals.
Programme Overview
Our sessions support children of all abilities, focusing on sensory play, dance, and movement. We use our groundbreaking Inclusive Movement Prompt (IMP) tool, which was developed to enable all children to explore new movements with their bodies. Our professional, kind, and patient dance leaders and support team ensure all children can participate fully, regardless of their physical, invisible, or learning disabilities.
Benefits of Our Sessions
Physical Development: Children engage in activities that help them explore new movements, improving physical control and coordination. For example, one parent noted significant progress in their child, Ali, who has explored new movements and gained better body control.
Social Skills: Our sessions provide opportunities for children to interact with different team members and peers, building social skills in a structured yet fun environment crucial for developing teamwork and communication skills.
Independence: Our programme helps children build independence from their parents and guardians. Ali, for instance, happily lets his parent go, feeling comfortable and secure with our team, which fosters his independence.
Parental Respite: Our sessions offer valuable time for parents and caregivers to complete tasks and enjoy personal time, which is rare for sole carers.

Personal care team or family members are welcome to participate in sessions.
The building and studio are wheelchair accessible, and the space is sensory-safe
We have ear defenders, sensory areas for deregulation, and breakout space.
We welcome all children, including PMLD, who pose no threat to other children.
Structure and Support
We ensure a consistent team and familiar faces each week, providing comfort and stability for the children. Our sessions are designed to be uplifting and enjoyable, with children working together to lively music in a kind and supportive atmosphere. We offer a taster session for parents and caregivers to experience our programme first-hand, although we typically see significant progress over a few weeks.
Children and young people aged 8 to 21 are welcome, along with their private carers or family members if preferred. We accommodate children with low to high support needs and can provide personal care and support as required. All staff are first aid trained and have experience working with children and young people with varying and complex needs. We strive to include everyone, so please let us know how we can support your child's needs.
Additional Considerations
Medication: We can administer medication in some circumstances, which will be discussed individually. We are first aid trained and can handle emergencies.
Changing Facilities: We have a large disabled access toilet with room for two carers and a wheelchair. We have mats for changing but no hoist or changing table.
A Caring and Positive Environment
Our experienced team is dedicated to providing each child with an expressive and explorative journey, creating a space where children can enjoy escapism, blossom, and grow. Our sessions are more than just activities; they enable children to develop holistically in a nurturing environment.
We are eager to continue providing this essential service and look forward to welcoming more children and their families to our Saturday morning sessions. For more information or to schedule a taster session, please get in touch with us. We support your child's journey toward greater independence and well-being.
