Poet, screenwriter and all-round creative, Henry Normal tells Adrian Goldberg how his Nottingham roots have flavoured his artistic career. One of the brains behind Nottingham Poetry Festival and The Royle Family, Henry records a live edition of the Made in the Midlands podcast which features the region’s stars.
Henry is a writer, poet, TV and film producer. He was born in St Ann’s in Nottingham and fell in love with writing after a teacher encouraged him to look for poetry in the lyrics of Bob Dylan and John Lennon.
He published his first book of poems at nineteen. He’s toured with Pulp, published over twelve collections of poetry, and he co-wrote all your favourite comedy TV shows, including the Mrs Merton Show and The Royle Family. He’s written radio shows for BBC Radio 4 and, in June 2017, he was honoured with a special BAFTA for services to television.
