Join us for a screening of exhibiting artist Claudia Martínez Garay’s short film, Ñuqa Kausakusaq Qhepaykitapas / I Will Outlive You (2017) followed by a Q+A with Curator, Diego Chocano.

After encountering a 1200-year-old ceramic vase at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin representing a Moche prisoner just before he is about to be sacrificed, Martínez Garay started speculating on the history of the artifact and the person that it depicts. The Ancient Peruvian Moche civilization (c. 100 - 700 AD) believed in the afterlife, and made sacrificial offerings to protect their loved ones beyond death.

The film Ñuqa Kausakusaq Qhepaykitapas / I Will Outlive You (15 mins 17 secs) is an exploration into the character of the prisoner depicted on the vase over time. In his monologue, the prisoner reflects on the time before his death when he is literally incarcerated, to his experience as a metaphorical prisoner in a museum display, to being part of an artwork in Martínez Garay's own film.

Following the screening of Martínez Garay's film, the artist will discuss the work and her wider practice with curator Diego Chocano, with an opportunity for the audience to ask their own questions.
