New York police detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) travels to Los Angeles on Christmas Eve hoping to reconcile with his estranged wife Holly at her office party.  

But before he can make his entrance at the Nakatomi Plaza, the guests are taken hostage by a group of ruthless terrorists led by radical German mastermind Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman). With his wife amongst the captives, and the LAPD providing little help, McClane must stop at nothing to beat the bad guys on his own.
