Described as possessing one of the ‘most gifted minds’, Andrei Korobeinikov opens our 2023-24 Sunday Piano Series with four works that tested their composers to their extremes. One of his last sonatas, Beethoven’s Op. 110 features a dramatic finale that rebuilds from a poignant expression of grief, to a joyous celebration of life. Chopin’s second Scherzo shows him at his brilliant best: big and brawny, it’s filled with magical coloration. Scriabin’s poetic second Sonata took all his patience to compose, resulting in what he considered his best work. Including a mischievous quote from God Save the King in Mr Pickwick, Andrei’s selection from Debussy’s atmospheric Préludes ends with Bastille Day fireworks.
