5 Things to Do in Nottingham This Week

Summer time in Notts is well underway, whether the sun makes an appearance for the long haul or not. And joining the summer party brigade is The Glee Club with their #BigGleeGiveaway. “You mean, free stuff?!” Yes, Hoodtowner. Free. Stuff. There’s to be a treasure hunt of sorts, in which The Glee Club will slowly reveal a series of secret location in Notts where they’ve hidden 1,000 find free tickets to comedy shows that’ll have you laughing right up until September. Whizzer. The tickets could be in your local cafe, an art gallery, and even the Aldi down the road. Who bleddy knows. Plus, if you get your mits on a set of tickets, there’s even more free stuff to win once you get to the gig. It’s the Glee that keeps on giving. Happy hunting.

Following the success of their Poetry Festival event, the lads behind Phlexx Records are kicking off a monthly poetry event at Suede Bar, this week, and we’re bleddy cackin’ our pants in excitement. Hosted by local bard, Another Poet, the night will see six proper diverse poets take to the stage for ten minutes of knock-out poetry and spoken word. The first event sees the likes of Leanne Moden, Jim Hall and Kevin Jackson take to the stage to spit some lyrical bars and rhyming couplets, alongside Mud Press galleh, Georgina Wilding. And you can tuck into a proper corker of a sourdough pizza while you listen, an’ all. Monday nights have never looked so good.

Ah, The Maze. One of our favourite venues in town, now made even better with the addition of some functioning air con thanks to their proper successful Kickstarter campaign and the generosity of you lot. Big up. To say thanks, The Maze are continuing to host some of the best events in the city, like this one right here. On Monday evening, round up a bunch of your best mates, pull up a pew, and sup on a pint as you take ‘em all down in a downright dirty game of Cards Against Humanity. You’re even allowed to bring a takeaway in with  you and munch as you go, long as you’re careful not to mucky up them games, mind.

Intit grand how you can catch some of London’s best entertainment at one of your favourite independent hometown venues. And this week, the Royal Ballet’s The Dream and Symphonic Variati is to be shown on the silver screen over at The Savoy Cinema. Frederick Ashton’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s The Dream sees a forest fairy wreaking havoc with a love potion. Yanno, the usual. And Symphonic Variations was the choreographer’s first post-World War II work. Top stuff. There’s to be six dancers taking it upon their pointe shoes to perform a series of duets, sextets, solos and quartets for your viewing pleasure, so book yersen a ticket and take a seat.

Mr Henry Normal has become a welcome mainstay on the Notts literary scene, and we’re bloody chuffed about it. Since bringing us the Nottingham Poetry Festival last year, he’s been popping up all over the shop, and Castle Rock Brewery even made a beer in his honour. This week, he’s raising money for the National Autistic Society with a poetic journey celebrating his autistic son, Johnny, with the help of a few snaps from the family photo album. It’s based on his acclaimed BBC Radio 4 show, A Normal Family, and takes a look at Henry’s personal experience with positivity. We’re right excited, us.
