We don’t need to remind you how many talented writers we’ve got living here in Notts, and there’s currently a very special opportunity for all you word whizzers…
The Krakow UNESCO City of Literature program is on the lookout for young and emerging writers to help create a greater diversity of voices on the Polish book market. This once in a lifetime opportunity could see one of you lot to head to Central Europe and get proper creative.
The residency aims to promote the Cities of Literature network and will hopefully strengthen international cooperation in the field of creative literature. But it’s not just about the literary success of the city; it will also provide the writer with a platform to showcase their work to a European audience and will help them create links with international writers.
The writer will win a two month stay at the Villa Decius - an official partner of the project which boasts years of experience of running international residencies - where they will spend their time participating in the literary life of the city. Poets are encouraged to apply for the residency from May 1 - June 30 2018, so they can get involved with the Miłosz International Poetry Festival, and all other writers should apply for September 1 - October 31 2018, to coincide with the Conrad Literature Festival.
Transport to and from Krakow will be covered, and they’ll also be given a stipend of 2500 PLN gross, which is around 520 pahnd. The Festival are sparing no cost to ensure that residents are given plenty of opportunities to promote their work in Poland.
Applications are open to writers aged between 25-45 from a UNESCO City of Literature, that have an upper immediate level of spoken English and are not afraid of gerrin stuck into life in Krakow. They’ll be plenty of writing to do, along with events, promotional interviews and engagements.
To apply, you are required to submit an extract from a published text, in either Polish or English, or a fragment of a translation in Polish, which can be no more than two pages long. You’ll also need to fill out an online application form and submit a biography of no more than a page, your CV and a letter of recommendation if you so please.
