If you happen to know someone who just keeps on being relentlessly optimistic and ridiculously good natured, then put them down for an award in one of the nine categories so that they might receive a nice little trophy for the mantle, and maybe a little less grief from your pessimistic uncle Geff.

Open to those living in the St Ann’s, Sneinton and Mapperley areas, anyone can be nominated, and being the community inclined, both individuals and groups can be put forward. Get cracking with the stamps and glue mind you, for nominations close on Sunday 31 December with the winners being decorated in all the well-deserved gratitude we can muster. There’s near two fistfulls of differing awards you can enter into with no caps on the different categories submitted.

There’s the Volunteering Gold Award, recognising those that just adamantly refuse to quit, displaying a long-standing commitment to volunteering. The Bringing Communities Together celebrates those who in any shape or form fold us into that dough called community, while the Community Group of the Year thanks those mavericks who dare to push the boat out, striking fear into the hearts of all them naysayers. There are awards for Young Volunteers as well as those Unseen Behind the Scenes, so there’s no excuse for not finding someone to shout out.

Whoever you know that improves the health and wellbeing of others, schlep their name on over and tell us why they deserve some back slapping recognition. Similarly, awards for contributing to the arts, sporting activities and improving the lives of children and young people all need a good heads up about themselves.

Notts gets by in a large part due to the inspiring dedication of time, energy and sheer willpower of so many diligent persons, who do it for no greater reason than a sense of civic pride and selfless goodwill. We’ve all been given a good excuse to recognise what they represent. So let’s have ‘em known.
