We’re always chuffed to call Nottingham home, but there are certain moments where we’re bursting with pride, and Beat The Streets is one of them. It’s a one-day, multi-venue charity festival taking over the city on Sunday 27 January, aiming to raise vital funds to support homeless people in need. Off the back of 2018’s hugely successful inaugural event, Nottingham will again host more than eighty national and local acts playing across 10+ stages in venues across the city centre. All proceeds raised from ticket sales, merchandise and bar sales in DHP venues will be donated to local homeless charities, including Framework Official Site. Here’s who we’ll be queuing for this year...
Don’t Forget Rupert
Hailing from Nottingham, but sounding as though they have emerged from a cabaret in Vegas, this four-piece have already caught the attention of Radio 1 and BBC Introducing. Their latest release Full Circle fuses baroque pop with rhythmic indie, and will delight fans of Panic! At The Disco. With tight drumming and melodic ‘wo-ahs’ aplenty, they mark an exciting revival of that noughties alternative sound we’ve all been secretly missing – be sure to check them out.
Fat Digester
If you know, you know. A Nottingham institution who turn 23 this year, Fat Digester bring the funk like no other. Whilst their composition of members changes with the wind, this music collective have a reputation as party starters and with good reason - with three charismatic front people, tireless guitars and bass, plenty of percussion and buckets of brass, their energy is infectious on a whole new level. By the end of the show you’ll feel part of the Fat Digester family, and you’ll never want to miss them again – expect funk, soul and hip-hop of the jazziest variety.
Keto
With a truly haunting voice, Keto (aka Leah Sanderson) transports audiences to celestial landscapes with her innovative and idiosyncratic brand of folk. Following the release of debut album Blackened Pool, which was recorded in the Outer Hebrides, Keto has shone at Green Man Festival, Glastonbury, and further afield in Paris and Iceland. Prepare to be spellbound as she brings her mesmerising sound to Beat The Streets.
Shiftwork
With a sound nestled somewhere between post-punk and noise rock, Shiftwork fuse dark lyrics with erratic melodies to create live performances which keep the audience seriously on their toes. Delicate at times and frantic at others, theirs is a sound you need to get lost in, and now’s your chance; get hooked on this innovative trio ahead of their upcoming EP launch.
Sundaze
Hot off the heels of recent energetic live shows at The Angel and The Chameleon, Sundaze dish up effervescent psych which will have fans of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard seriously captivated. Their jazzy and buoyant guitar-led pop is self-assured and exciting, and pushes them right up our ‘ones to watch’ list for 2019.
Whisky Stain
If swaggering, heavy blues is your thing, you need to catch two-piece Whisky Stain. They’re a certified power house, with a live presence which belies their two bodies. They unveiled Time Waits For No Man in 2018, a gritty yet melody-infused EP which truly showcases this band’s ability to deliver bittersweet and catchy rock. You’ll almost taste the Jack Daniels as you swing your hips to their riffs, we swear.
