We've got quite the variety of events happening this week, from opera on screen and DIY punk gigs with Bad Milk Blood Robot to theatre infused with circus skills. Here's our top picks...

Josh Kearns

The Market Deeping Model Railway Club

When: Monday 6 July - Sat 25 July
Where: Nottingham Playhouse
How much: From £14.50

This is a new play, written by celebrated Nottingham playwright, William Ivory, who wrote the screenplay for 2010 film Made in Dagenham. Inspired by true events, the plot follows a small town railway modelling club in the east midlands area, who respond to vandalism on one of their projects by sourcing help from around the world, including unexpected aid from singer Rod Stewart. It’s directed by Adam Penford, one of the Playhouse’s three leaders, who’s become a bit of a legend in the Notts creative scene from helming internationally recognised local plays like Punch. Where: The Angel Microbrewery
How much: Free

Do you like people, pints and the planet? Perhaps you should head down to the Angel this week for a friendly meet-up with some likeminded folk. Everyone is welcome, no matter your background or experience, and the PPP network spreads all over the world. Find out what's going on locally, how you can get involved and share ways to be more sustainable, whilst having a lovely pint in a historic Nottingham pub.

Nottingham In Infrared

Aida on Sydney Harbour

When: Thursday 9 July / Monday 13 July
Where: The Savoy Cinema
How much: From £10

This new production of famous 19th century opera Aida is going to be screened all the way from Sydney Harbour Australia right here in Nottingham. If you don’t know the story, it’s a tragic romance between an Egyptian military commander and an Ethiopian princess, pitting the affairs of the heart against the grand and uncontrollable movements of history and kingdoms. It’s going to be pretty impressive to watch, whether or not you’re into opera – Sydney harbour is a very magical place and the backdrop of the setting sun should make the story feel extra powerful. Plus you get to watch it in the Savoy’s comfortable art deco facilities.

Fat Digester

Bad Milk Blood Robot

When: Saturday 11 July
Where: Fisher Gate Point
How much: £7.15

Midway through this month, a vibrant quintuple bill of punk bands will feature at creative hub Fisher Gate Point. Headlining are Bad Milk Blood Robot, a local group and seasoned live performers who have become known for their psychedelic and zany grunge sound. Also performing are London group Healthy Junkies, decade old band PollyPikPocketz, genre blending Notts act Hex Poseur, and synth-y protest group Idiocy. Quite the set of names. Fisher Gate Point’s set to well and truly vibrate with guitar noise across this show, so we definitely recommend that you check it out.

No Sugar No Milk

When: Sunday 12 July
Where: Lakeside Arts Theatre
How much: From £12.50

This is a production by acclaimed Hong Kong-based physical theatre company TS Crew. It depicts the vibrant inner workings of a Cha Chaan Teng – a type of local diner that’s a fixture of Hong Kong culture and a figurative ‘home’ for Hong Kong communities. The performers fuse circus skills and storytelling to tell stories about home, identity and belonging – it should be a spectacular watch, as the performers are very skilled. This show was also taken to the Edinburgh Fringe last year, so now’s a really great, once in a blue moon opportunity to see and enjoy it.
