Charlie Peace brought back to life in Nottingham-based graphic novel
Last year Michael Eaton and Eddie Campbell teamed up to produce a play about the extraordinary life of Victorian thief Charlie Peace. Now they have collaborated once more to bring him to the page for graphic novel Dawn of the Unread.
This is the latest mythologizing of Peace’s life. Previously his exploits have been celebrated in films, Penny Dreadfuls, comics, books, waxwork exhibits, travelling fairground theatres and broadside ballads such as the ‘Chorus From The Gallows’ sold at the foot of the scaffold.
On working with Eddie Campbell, Michael said: “The last page is, for me, particularly exhilarating – wonderful to see my words set out like this – a post-modern broadside ballad – a true Chorus from the Gallows. He’s really worked so meticulously on this and it does me proud. It somehow distils the essence of both ‘From Hell’ and my play.”

We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
