It's now five years since the city's green and gold art institution first opened its doors to the public

Nottingham Contemporary turned five years old on Friday 14 November.  The £20m green and gold building, decorated with lace embossed concrete panels from a Nottingham design, opened on 14 November 2009.

Queues immediately formed around the building for its first exhibitions – the early works of David Hockney, paired with American artist Frances Stark. Since then the gallery has shown 31 international art exhibitions to 930,000 people.

We have a favour to ask

LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
