Event: Girlhood Screening
Synopsis: Fed up with her education prospects, brutal family and macho neighbourhood, 16-year-old Marieme transforms herself and joins a girl ‘gang’ in this frank, compelling story set in the tough suburbs of Paris. Panel Q&A about the representation of black women and women of colour in the mainstream media. Expert panel participants:
• Sonia Long (Chair) is MD of New Rose Associates Ltd, which runs Sojourner’s Sisters, a local informal learning/support group for women of Black and Mixed Black Heritage.
• Michelle ‘the Mother’ Hubbard is a performance poet, storyteller, African drummer and workshop facilitator based in Nottingham, who performs regularly across the UK.
• Patcee Francis set up Syncopate Media 3 years ago, and is a producer and documentary maker for radio and television.

Event: Fearsome Ambition Double Bill: Election and Death Becomes Her
Synopsis: The Film and TV section of Impact (the University of Nottingham’s official student magazine) presents a double bill examining the darker side of ambition. As that famous shrinking violet Napoleon once remarked, “Great ambition is the passion of a great character.” If that is the case then our double bill features two of the greatest characters to grace cinema, as their career ambitions find them caught facing opposition from competitors, friends and little things like morals and ethics. As circumstance and their extreme drive pushes them into uncertain territory, it’s clear that great ambition all consuming if one doesn’t maintain control over it.

Event: The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz screening
Synopsis: The Internet’s Own Boy follows the story of programming prodigy and information activist Aaron Swartz. From Swartz’s help in the development of the basic internet protocol RSS to his co-founding of Reddit, his fingerprints are all over the internet. But it was Swartz’s groundbreaking work in social justice and political organising combined with his aggressive approach to information access that ensnared him in a two-year legal nightmare. It was a battle that ended with the taking of his own life at the age of 26. Aaron’s story touched a nerve with people far beyond the online communities in which he was a celebrity. This film is a personal story about what we lose when we are tone deaf about technology and its relationship to our civil liberties.

Event: Lisztomania screening and closing party
Synopsis: The Kneel Before Zod Video Club bring the Scalarama Nottingham 2015 festivities to a close with a screening of Ken Russell's Lisztomania featuring DJs, trailers and pin-the-professionalism-on-the-Ben game. Lisztomania is a 1975 film by Ken Russell, drawn from a biography of Franz Liszt. Depicting the flamboyant Liszt as the first classical pop star, Lisztomania features contemporary rock star Roger Daltrey (of The Who) as Franz Liszt. The film was released the same year as Tommy, which also starred Daltrey and was directed by Russell.
