Monday 14 September
Event: Appropriate Behaviour #directedbywomen screening
Synopsis: For Shirin (Desiree Akhavan), being part of a perfect family isn’t easy. Acceptance eludes her from all sides: her family doesn’t know she’s bisexual, and her ex-girlfriend, Maxine (Rebecca Henderson), can’t understand why she doesn’t tell them. From writer/director/actress Desiree Akhavan (the unfathomable love-child of Woody Allen, Lena Dunham and Tina Fey) comes an ironic, Iranian, hipster date movie; Appropriate Behaviour is an achingly cool, post-feminist comedy about what happens when a girl comes out and discovers that extraordinary is the new ordinary.

Event: Bad Boy Bubby screening
Synopsis: He's been in his room for 35 years. It’s time to let him out. Rolf de Heer's 1993 feature, Bad Boy Bubby is essentially a bizarre sort of coming of age tale which sees the titular ‘mad bastard’ man-child Bubby let loose in the world on a journey of self-discovery after living what has amounted to a life sentence inside the confines of the family home. On release it won the Grand Special Jury Prize at Venice and Wikipedia advises it was the second highest grossing film in Norway in 1995, beaten only by Batman Forever. Production-wise it’s notable for using 32 directors of photography (each handling an individual scene during the latter parts of the film) and for featuring a binaural soundtrack achieved by recording through a set of microphones stitched into the hairpiece of the main character played by Nicholas Hope.
