Queer Band Slash Fiction on their Upcoming Show at JT Soar: " If we don't fight for visibility, what are we even doing?"
Wed 12 Feb 2020Since I moved to Nottingham as a young, queer person, I’ve been fortunate to stumble into the world of local indie, punk and DIY punk gigs, which have provided me with a community and more importantly, a place to go on a Friday night. Now, as an older, queer lesbian, I’m aware of the importance of carving out queer spaces, especially within rock clubs and bars that can be dominated by cis-gender, heterosexual boys.
We spoke to Beans from Queer band Slash Fiction ahead of their upcoming Fan Club debut show at JT Soar about personal lyrics, influences and their EP Flowers...

JT Soar's Phil Booth: "The gigs aren't here to make money for the space."
Mon 27 Jan 2020Over the past decade, an angular building in Sneinton has grown into one of the UK’s most revered DIY music spaces. JT Soar, a fruit and potato warehouse turned studio, rehearsal space and gig venue, will celebrate its tenth birthday this month, with founder Phil Booth still very much at the helm. Sockful of Porridge: A Series of Gigs to Raise Funds for Social and Ecological Good Causes
Mon 09 Sept 2019“Can tell you’re not a re-enactor.” I first encounter Dr. Lesley Prince – Les – outside The Broadway Cinema in the rain, having a smoke. Rain plops into his cup of tea, and when I express discomfort at the weather, this is his response. You see, Les is a battle-hardened veteran of the English Civil War Society. But this is only part of what makes up the picture of this fascinating Clifton-born academic, who is now turning his energy to organising charity events across the city…

In a year, they’ve held multiple Repair Cafes that have helped over 200 people save 865kg of carbon from our atmosphere, and 73kg of waste from the bin. And that’s just for electrical items alone. Here, the team have given us a few tips on fixing household bits that you might ordinarily ditch.

School of Hard Notts: Puro-Vision
Tue 12 Feb 2019Wrestle Gate Pro (WGP) landed in Nottingham in January for their exciting debut show Open Gate an event noticeably influenced by Japanese wrestling. Also known as Puro it’s a relatively realistic, punishing style where wrestlers primarily get over* by displaying their “fighting spirit” i.e. willingness to absorb and subsequently dish-out a beating against any odds. In some ways a style at the other end of the spectrum from traditional UK wrestling were intangible factors like charisma can be as significant as pain threshold or athletic ability - Crabtree, I am looking at you.
