Any new beer from Castle Rock is cause for joy - but one that celebrates International Women’s Day, raises money for a vital local institution, and encourages more women into the brewing industry? Even better.

Crystal Clear, a golden ale brewed with New Zealand hops, was developed in collaboration with Brewster’s Brewery, with founder Sara Barton crafting the refreshing recipe.

Both breweries invited women of all abilities and backgrounds to a brew day at Castle Rock, where they helped make the magic happen - getting stuck in with everything from working with the brewing vessels to taking readings in the laboratory.

Alongside welcoming women to help brew the beer, the two breweries also invited self-identifying women to enter a competition to design the artwork for the ale’s pump clip.

This collaborative craft will launch on Wednesday 8 March with a special event at the Old Cold Store. Free to visit, and welcome to all, this launch will offer guests the chance to hear live music from Girlband and Alexa Hawksworth, check out the pump clip designs, and try the brew for themselves.

The beer will then go on sale at pubs across Nottingham, the East Midlands and beyond over the following weeks - giving everyone the chance to buy a pint of this crisp new brew for themselves.

International Women’s Day is so relevant in our line of work given the brewing and pub industry have been historically challenging for women, from the hyper-sexualisation of bar staff, to a lack of representation in senior positions or even in the brewery itself

Money raised through the sale of the beer will be donated to Nottingham Women’s Centre - the Chaucer Street charity run by women for women, which offers a multitude of services, from support for refugees to counselling for abuse victims.

Castle Rock’s Marketing Manager, Jess Collins, said: “This whole thing has been an amazing experience for all of us. International Women’s Day is so relevant in our line of work given the brewing and pub industry have been historically challenging for women, from the hyper-sexualisation of bar staff, to a lack of representation in senior positions or even in the brewery itself.

“It isn’t often we are able to come together to celebrate all that we bring to the table. It was important for us to bring the community into our celebrations – that’s why we opened the brew day up to everyone and launched the design competition – and it was amazing to have so many women get involved.”
