5 Things to Do in Nottingham This Weekend

We’ve all seen at least one rom-com where a bunch of American teens flock to a field in their pickup trucks, armed with popcorn and a blanket, to catch the latest movie at an outdoor cinema. We’ve all felt that pang of jealousy that our British weather stops us partaking in such fun activities. Well, hows about you ignore the forecast of heavy rain, and have a stab at this favourite stateside pastime? The plaza outside Blend Coffee house at Sneinton Market has picked Princess Bride for this month's outdoor screening, and will be providing everything you could possibly need to enjoy the film al fresco. Pop down half an hour before it starts to bag yersen the comfiest seats, and grab a pint and a hotdog from The Super Kitchen. All seating will be provided, but feel free to bring a blanket or some pillows if you like.

There’s nowt better than a nice long soak in the tub at the end of a stressful working week. The hot water, the bubbles, watching your fingers go all wrinkly... it’s dead relaxin’. So if yer one of these people that can’t get enough of funky bath bombs that turn the water purple and fill the tub with glitter, the Malt Cross is hosting a workshop where you can learn to make your own, courtesy of Black Acres Soap Pantry. Each person will get to make around twelve bath bombs, using a variety of scents, colours and botanicals. You don’t need any previous experience to take part and the whole thing only costs £15. When a posh one from the shop normally costs about a fiver a pop, it’s a bleddy bargain.

For the second year running, Broad Street is gonna be taken over by banging beats for a festival of electro-music goodness. Seven venues, ten promoters and just one night when Hockley’s famed strip becomes the stomping ground for every bass lover in Notts. Broadway, Rough Trade, The Angel Microbrewery, Brewdog, Bar Eleven and Suede will all play host to names such as Harleighblu, Ali Mck, Congi and Rubberdub V Tumble Audio for a night of live DJs and performances. Chuck in some live art, clothing stalls and plenty of food to get yer gob round, and you’ve got yoursen a full blown festival to help wave goodbye to summer. The whole place is gonna be full to the brim of sweaty bodies skanking until the sun comes up, and there’s nothing we love better. So who’s on it?

It’s been 30 years since The Running Man’s original release, and so to celebrate, The Loft Movie Theatre, Porlock Press and The Film Exchange are letting you experience this film like never before; taking part in the film’s battle action yourself. If yer brains need some refreshing on the plot: It’s 2019, the world is running out of natural resources, and we live under a totalitarian state. All media is censored, but a game show called The Running Man proves popular with the people; a game where prisoners must run to escape death. Head down to Notts’ laser quest arena, Quasar, to join the runners or the stalkers in this battle for supremacy, celebrating your victory with a special screening of the film. If you don’t fancy getting in on the action, you can also bag a spectator ticket where you can watch the kill zone activity from the safety of the balcony with a pint in hand.

Nottingham’s own green festival is returning this year to celebrate it’s 25th birthday. Setting up camp in the Arboretum, there will be plenty for you and the family to get stuck into, and to educate yourself in all things environmentally friendly and ethical. Potter around the grounds and chomp on some vegan and veggie nosh; enjoy the free live music performances; or send the sprogs off to join in with the kid’s entertainment. The fest will host over 100 stalls from small green businesses, offering everything from natural therapies to craft producers and campaign groups. And if yer really feel like living the green life for the day, you can even join a group of other green-fingers in Market Square at noon to cycle to the event together. It’s a whole day dedicated to celebrating the things that make our planet a better place.
