5 Things to Do in Nottingham This Weekend

BrewDog’s Collabfest has returned for 2017, and this year marks the fifth anniversary of epic beer collaborations. Each BrewDog bar across the UK and internationally has teamed up with a local brewery to create a hoppy, one of a kind beer, with both a unique recipe and design. Then, across the weekend they’ll be a synchronised launch of all the collaborative beers, which means you guys will get to try the lot. Grab yersen a full measure of one or sample a few of them on a flight board to try and decide which one is your favourite. BrewDog Nottingham has teamed with up Black Irish Brewery to create their masterpiece, and we can’t wait to have a sip.

Community Theatre group Under the Headstocks have knocked up a cracking charity production to raise some dolla for Gem’s CashForKids appeal. The show playfully explores the nature of language and communication through modern clowning and slap-stick comedy, and also has a great message about homelessness attached to it. The story follows the lives of main characters Trevelyan and Dev, who come together to perform a radio play, despite their troubles with using language and improvisation. Turns out, it’s bleddy difficult for them.  It was written and directed by Alan Dawson, a lovely chap who has previously been nominated for the Accessible Britain Challenge for one of his previous creations.  Itsa heartwarming production that the sprogs will love, and it’s all in the name of helping disadvantaged children.

Aussie comedy phenomenon Luisa Omielan is stopping off in Hoodtown to bring us her newest smash-hit comedy show. Now, Luisa is a busy gal, and she ain’t one to mess about. Her first show ‘What Would Beyonce Do?’ was hailed as one of the biggest stand up hits of the last decade and BBC3 even launched it as a stand up special. She’s also sold out tours in twelve countries, released a book, crowdfunded a DVD and racked up 40 million views on that thigh gap joke. We told yer, busy gal. And now, she’s back with her follow up show, where you can expect to hear her rant about body-shaming, one night stands and mental health shaming. It will be like a big old girlie gossip with some right giggles thrown in for good measure.

Last week it was Beeston, this week it’s the city. Another one of Nottingham’s glorious charity music festivals, Oxjam, is gearing up to take over our city for a day’s worth of music and all-round super-fun times. This multi-venue music festival is hoping to raise more than £3000 for good owd Oxfam with five hours of cracking live music for you to get stuck into. Pop along to Spanky Van Dykes for some indie rock ‘n’ roll, or head to The Orange Tree to get the ultimate chill vibes from their acoustic sessions. With the lineup including Notts legends like Babe Punch, Ryan Farmer, Short Weekends, Vega Bay, Super Furniture and more, they’ll be a little something for everyone. All proceeds from the day go towards fighting poverty and improving the lives of the world’s poorest people, so sling ‘em a few pennies wouldja? See you there.

We don’t need to remind yers that people in Notts go barmy over a bit of Robin Hood. It’s what our city is known for, and we ain’t scared to shamelessly name drop him to sell anything, from taters to carpets. And now it’s time for the biggest RH event on the calendar - the annual Robin Hood Pageant. Taking place over this weekend, prepare to step back in time into a 12th century Nottingham, a village full of period cooking, traditional crafts, jesters, street theatre, music and puppet shows. Grab yersen some roasted meat and ales before trying yer hand at archery or watching jousting knights trying to knock each other off their horse. And not forgetting, the hotly anticipated battle between Robin himself and the Sheriff of Nottingham. There’s two shows daily at 11am and 2pm, and yer ticket also includes entry to the castle itself. Now, be gone with yer. We’re off for a spot of horseback sword fighting.
