5 Things to Do in Nottingham This Weekend

When Mariano Doronzo moved to Nottingham in 2014, he didn’t know anyone or anything. To combat his loneliness, he started gettin’ snap happy in the city and found that he actually quite liked it here. And now, he’s created an exhibition of photos that represent his feelings from his first moments in Hoodtown. The exhibition includes over fifty photos, all of them taken within the last three years and shot on analogue film, before being processed and printed in the Photo Parlour darkroom. We at the ‘Lion supported Mariano’s crowdfunding for this exhibition, so we already know it's gonna be a belter. Time for you lot to go and see that for yoursens.

ASBO Disco are known for throwing some of the most banging late-night parties that Boomtown has ever seen, and it’s that time of year again where these crazy cats make their way to Notts to skank through the night. It wouldn’t be a Um Kongo X ASBO collab if there weren’t gonna be non-stop bangers from dusk til dawn, so we can guarantee they’ll have you junglists and ravers covered. Across two rooms, you can expect to hear from the likes of; FLeCK, Killjoy, Kreed, Rukus, Wheresnorth?, Fizzy Gillespie, Barang! and Earthpipe. These party people travel from Bristol to London, Manchester and more, so don’t miss your opportunity to rave with the royalty when they stop off in our city.

Acoustic-folk favourite George Gadd is gonna be live at Rough Trade promoting his new track, Not Human. It’s been a busy few years for our lad; picking up tour spots for The Xcerts, The Front Bottoms and Kevin Devine, and travelling all over Europe and America. More recently, he came back to his native Notts to show off those infectious melodies at Y Not Festival, Dot to Dot and a sellout show at Bodega.  Written in the aftermath of an abusive relationship, Not Human see’s George ditch the twee folk-pop that we all know and love and crank up the distortion for a much moodier vibe. And it ain’t half catchy. Plus, as a treat to us all, there’ll be support from the likes of Cameron Sinclair Harris, Katie Cooper and Anwyn Williams.

I’m Not From London have decided to start dipping their toes into the world of art, and we can’t get enough. This month they’re hosting a free exhibition at The Malt Cross showcasing a collection of work from the new surrealism artist Maximillion. Aiming to ‘explore the history of surrealism with a contemporary twist’, the exhibition draws together over twenty giclee digital art prints, with pieces ranging from eighteenth century inspired French portraiture to fifties pin-up girls. Fans of Andy Warhol’s pop portraits should be sure to check this here out. Seeing as it’s his first solo show for 31 years, INFL have pulled out all the stops for opening night, planning a shindig starting at 8.30pm with musical appearances by The Hijinks, Luna Rosa and Loz.

Calling Nottingham film buffs; here's your chance to focus those peepers on something that's a complete stranger to our local screens. The London Korean Film Festival is back for its twelfth year, and has partnered up with Broadway to bring some of their best films to us here in Hoodtown as part of their UK touring programme. This fest is one of the longest running and most respected festivals dedicated to Korean cinema and has made its name by showing the best films out there, from the countries biggest blockbusters to thought-provoking independents. On Friday you can catch The Merciless, a Tarantino inspired movie which features in their Special Focus: Korean Noir selection, and on Saturday they'll be showing In Between Seasons, an independent film focusing on homophobia. Get out yer comfort zones and try summat new.
