It’s a Sunday evening, you’re hanging. Spent all day sleeping and feeling self pitiful and dreading that Monday morning feeling. What can you do to pick yourself up and out of a dark, dark place? Stuff your face with roast potatoes, that’s what. Here are the top places to get a roast dinner in Nottingham…
The Cross Keys
Sitting pretty just off Weekday Cross, The Cross Keys can sort anyone out; no matter how big yer appetite. For their ‘Sunday Best’, choose from oven-roast chicken, prime beef, pork loin or a seasonal meat to pop a-top the trimmings and homemade gravy and you’re sorted. But they don’t just cater to meat eaters here - they’ve got many a fish and veggie option, plus they’re well prepared for anyone that can’t have gluten. Who even knew gluten free gravy existed? One course will set you back £10.95, but why not splash out on the full three for £16.95 and be done with it.
The Cock and Hoop
Just ten pahnd for a full Sunday dinner? Ain’t that a bleddy bargain. The Cock in Hoop is part of the Lace Market hotel, so is in prime position if you stuff your stomach too much and need a post-roast lie down. Sat inside a listed building, it’s elegant decorations and chilled vibes make for a proper nice food affair. Served from 12pm-6pm every Sunday, you’re looking at a selection of roast meats served with traditional beef dripping roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings and vegetables - glazed carrots and buttered broccoli, no less. We’ve also heard amazing things about their apple crumble…
The Hand in Heart
This place gives you a roast with a giant helping of history. Tuck in to your Sunday scran while sitting inside one of Nottingham’s sandstone caves at The Hand in Heart. They’ve got a mega range of meats - from belly pork to slow cooked lamb shank - but are changing the game for all the veggies out there; their sun blush tomato and hazelnut roast sounds divine. If there’s any room left in yer stomach afterwards, there’s seven desserts for you to pick from. SEVEN. Most folk aren’t aware that they’re hiding a cave downstairs, so get a table booked in quick before the news spreads.
Riverside Farm
You really can’t beat a do-it-yourself, piling-up-your-plate carvery, can you duck? Dead cheap and cheerful, you’ll be desperate to go back for more. Start yoursen off with a selection of roast meats or a peppered mushroom pie, and then stack your plate high with their seasonal and signature accompaniments. Depending on the size of your plate, prices range from a fiver to just under a tenner, or you can opt for a roast carvery bap if you’re not up for the whole hog. But it’s go big or go home, innit? For just £12 you can bag yoursen an ultimate carvery - served in a giant yorkshire puddin’ with two pigs in blankets for good measure. Yes please.
Larwood and Voce
In 2015, this Wessie B gaff was voted best venue in the UK for a Sunday roast, by the Best British Roast Dinner Competition. Can’t argue with that, can yer? Their Sunday mains cost anywhere between £12.50-£17.50 and you can pick from slow roast pork belly, lamb, half a roast chicken or their fish and vegetarian options with all the trimmings you could ever need. This place even serves up some of the holy grail, saucy accompaniments; cranberry sauce anyone? They’ve just started doing takeaway roasts, too. Oh Larwood and Voce, you do spoil us.
The Golden Fleece
For years, Nottingham folk have been banging on about how The Golden Fleece has the best roast in town. A classic, local boozer complete with big comfy chairs and a relaxing atmosphere, it’s the perfect kind of place to enjoy your ‘taters. As for the food itself, they serve a classic meat and two-veg kind of affair, complete with all the trimmings. Sometimes, the classics really are the best.
OAKS
When a restaurant specialises in meat, it would be pretty criminal if their roast wasn’t up to scratch. Luckily for OAKS, they’ve done more than enough to prove they belong high up in the Sunday dinner steaks. Splash out £13.95 on one of their classic roasts and you’ll receive your choice of meat, veg, ‘taters, yorkies and gravy. But if you find yoursen after a taste of summat different, change things up with their wide variety of sausages, like the pork and pancetta or lamb and aubergine. They’ve also got plenty of fish and veggie stuff to feast on. A proper meaty feast at a proper meaty place.
Harts
This one is dead fancy. The sorta gaff you’d take the in-laws to if you’re out to impress ‘em. It’s the most pricey pick - setting you back £23.50 for two courses or £29.50 for the full three - but when you lay your peepers on that menu, you’ll see why. For starters you could have a spot of potted duck, cured salmon or pea and mint velouté before launching yoursen into what’s possible the poshest sounding Sunday scran we’ve ever seen. Their menu changes daily to reflect the best seasonal ingredients around, but the sorta nosh you can be expecting is; roast sirloin of beef with horseradish hollandaise and Yorkshire pudding; roast guinea fowl and peas à la Française; Derbyshire lamb; cod and mushroom risotto… yer get the gist. Dead. Posh.
