5 Things to Do in Nottingham This Week

Now we know this here pantomime began last week, but we just had so much to tell yer, we couldn't fit it in the schedule. Plus, pantomimes are always a mad ting. Best to wait a week for all the unbearable screeching kiddies to go along before you take your darling sprog. This year’s family pantomime is Beauty and the Beast; a tale that teaches the little ’uns to pick brains over beauty. It boasts a talented cast, with TV star, presenter and Notts native Sherrie Hewson as Mrs Potty and TV and stage star Ben Richards as the Beast. You can be sure they’ll be plenty of singing, magic and laughter at the East Midlands’ biggest pantomime. It’s gonna be a good’un.

Due to popular demand, these Glaswegian indie rockers will be hitting the stage at Rescue Rooms for a show which is bound to bring a little more grunge to your Tuesday Night. Stopping off in good owd Notts during their short UK tour, the duo will be performing tunes from their new album Babes Never Die. Never heard their stuff before? Expect loud guitars, infectious drum beats and dreamy vocals. They are deffo one to watch in the new year. On the night, support will be coming from winners of Future Sound of Nottingham 2016, Super Furniture.

The Screen at Contemporary is a beautiful thing. Flopping onto the sofa at the end of a long day and sticking a film on the tele is all well and good, but it does nowt for your social life. ‘Tempreh’s cinema programme gets you outta the house to watch classic, cult and art house films in a loveleh setting, surrounded by other film buffs. This week there is an extra special screening of the 1947 Chrimbo classic, which see’s a Macy’s Santa Clause wrongly accused of a crime. Time to get off the sofa and into the festive spirit, duck.

Whatever happened to carolling? Heading out on a cold winter's night to sing songs about Baby Jesus on the doorsteps of people who needed extra christmas cheer? Well, this week they’ll be a group dahn at the Hand and Heart who are looking for you lot to join in - it’s gonna be a mega festive sing along.  Hosted by the Newman Trust, all donations from the night will go towards their work; providing activity based holidays for children and young people with disabilities. There'll be all the usual suspects - mulled wine, mince pies and ugly jumpers - and they’ll even provide you with sleigh bells and half-coconut shells so your rendition of Little Donkey will be spot on.

The Old Nottinghamians Society are a bunch of do-gooders. And we don’t mean that in a wet flannel kinda way; over the years they’ve done plenty to improve the lives of all of us here in Notts. Back in 2015, they hosted a gig at The Maze and raised £1,424 for the Saving Lives Helipad Appeal for the QMC. And now, they’re at it again. This one will be in aid of the Renal & Transplant Unit at Nottingham City Hospital, which is in need of televisions to make the experience better for patients. Every £230 they can raise will buy a TV, stand and headphones. To help ‘em out, they’ve roped in the musical talents of Alice Short, Izzy Carlin, Matt Humphries, Rielly Newbold and Harry Smith Quintet. Go on peeps, do yer bit.
