20 Fingers - Mania Akbari

This month see’s ‘Temphreh showing a collection of films by one of the most exceptional Iranian female directors, Mania Akbari. Unlike a lot of Iranian cinema, her style is more modern visual arts than melodrama, and address themes such as sexual identity, abortion, infidelity and lesbianism. 20 Fingers (2004) was a winner of the Best Feature Film Award at Venice Film Festival in the digital section, and is divided into several episodes which explore relationships within the confines and conflicts that arise from Middle Eastern traditions and social conventions. It follows a man and woman as they engage in a form of role play, having conversations which reflect the struggles of couples in the Middle East.

Sneinton Vegan Market

As with every first Saturday of the month, the city’s best vegan food and craft stalls will be setting up shop in Sneinton Market to provide us all with the cruelty free goodies. Whether you’re a long time veganer, you’ve just made the switch or you’re taking part in the #veganary that we keep hearing about, this is the perfect place to stock up on nosh or sample some sweet, dairy free treats. Also, everyone is dead friendleh, so it’s also a great place to meet likeminded people or find out more information on maintaining a plant based diet. Our taste buds are tingling.

Taco Hell’s Super Sad Farewell Show

Having been a firm favourite on the Notts music scene for a while now, it’s with a heavy heart that we’ve gorra say farewell to Taco Hell. The four-piece are putting down the cutlery and saying no more to extra guacamole due to geographical factors, but they ain’t gonna leave us high and dry. Join ‘em for one last shindig where they’ll be belting out their best tunes, including one’s from their highly acclaimed EP ‘Retainer’, for the final time. They’ve also roped in their dear friends Kermes, Cherry Hex and the Dream Church and Phaedra’s Love to make it a night they’ll never forget. We’re gonna miss you, ducks.

New Year’s Revolution 2

Local punk rock fans can rejoice, as Rock City is bringing back New Year’s Revolution for another year of loud music and pint sinking. From 2pm-10pm, the Basement will be taken over for a bash that’s set to cheer us all up after the new year funk. Headlining the show are Hung Like Henratty, whose hard-hitting tunes are not for the faint-hearted. Their songs on ex-wives, wheelie bin cleaners and road-blocking tractors saw them become the runaway winners of of the Introducing Stage at the Great British Alternative Festival in 2017 and earn a place in our hearts. Supporting will be Resistance 77, Duncan Reid & The Big Heads, Verbal Warning, The F***wits, 3 Stone Monkey and Rubber Gun Squad. It’s gonna be madness.
Sunday 7 January, 2pm-10pm, £13.20, Rock City, event link
