Circus Work

Peter Lavery was just a little tiddler when he made his first trip to the circus in his hometown of Wakefield. The dazzling costumes, bright lights and wondrous acts made such an impression on young Peter, that he’s since spent the last fifty years photographing circus performers from around Britain. Circus Work is considered to be one of the most important examples of human and social documentation produced in Britain, with each shot being taken on a plate camera and featuring a impressive collection of circus subjects. But it’s not all about the glitz and glamour, some of these shots show moments of ordinariness in extraordinary lives. Go check it owt.

Slam Cabaret with That Welsh Woman

Back in the twenties, folk loved nothing more than kickin’ back in the leather seats of their local speakeasy and gawping at the finest cabaret in town. Big White Shed decided it was high time Notts got a taste of the bourgeois, so they’ve convinced eight novelty/cabaret acts to don stockings and battle it out to become the first ever Slam Cabaret champs. That Welsh Woman is coming out of retirement to oversee the antics, enlisting the help of special guest band Chateau Rouge to get us all in the mood. Think school talent show, with a bit more saucy behaviour.

The Big Valentines Movie Night

Look. We’re not gonna go into Valentines politics here; some people love it, some people hate it. Each ta yer own an’ all that. However, whether you’re single or not, this seems like the perfect thing to do on the most loved up day of the year. Slip on some cosy socks and sink into a seat at Rescue Rooms, where they’ll be treating you lot to two classic rom-coms; When Harry Met Sally and Notting Hill. Popcorn in one hand, your lovers’ in the other and a variety of cocktails to wash the cheesy flicks down with… what else do you need? Catch us at the front going all gooey-eyed over Hugh Grant.

Beeston Tales

This storytelling night at the White Lion has been tickling our pickle for a while now. Dedicated to the vibrant and ancient art of storytelling, Beeston Tales showcases up and coming local tellers who love nothing more than spinning a story and gettin’ the audience involved, too. Hosted by Tim Ralphs and Mike Payton, this month’s stories will come from Joseph Sobol, with Jack and the Least Gal and other appalachian wondertales. Expect plenty of giggles and some surprise musical numbers…
Wednesday 14 February, 7.30pm, £5-£6, The White Lion, event link

Syria’s Disappeared

Get down to the New Art Exchange on Thursday to hear the hidden story of tens of thousands of men, women and children who, under the Syrian regime of President Assad, disappeared into a network of clandestine detention centres. Syria’s Disappeared: The Case Against Assad is being presented in association with Syria Solidarity UK and will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A around the inspirational fight for justice for Syria’s detainees. Suitable for 18+. This sounds like a dead interesting watch.
Thursday 15 February, 6.30pm-8.30pm, free, New Art Exchange, event link
