5 Things to Do in Nottingham This Weekend

In this day and age, if summat breaks we waste no time trying to repair it. Hole in yer jumper? Chuck it. Electric razor stopped razing? Replace it. Bike wheel bost? Hop on the tram, duck. By giving up on these items so quickly, we’re not only forcing oursens to spend our hard earned cash on a replacement, but we’re resigning these items for a life at the landfill where they’ll sit for hundreds of years. Help yourself - and our world - out by getting yoursen into a ‘fix not throw away’ mindset by attending Nottingham Fixers repair cafe, where a group of volunteers will be trying their best to mend your broken items. The sort of items they’ll be fixing this week will depend on the volunteers available, but in the past they’ve had a lot of success with small electricals, bikes, jewellery, ornaments and clothing.

Our favourite girl gang is giving women/non-binary people the chance to learn to DJ, in collaboration with Sonia of local DJ collective, Stiff Kittens. From 5pm-8pm, half an hour slots are available for some of you lot to spin tracks and learn how to really get an audience going. From 8pm onwards, the usual Fan Club shenanigans will commence, and they’ll be a be a bit of time for you to put your new skills into practice by playing a short set. Feel free to bring yer pals along to watch you perform, but the half hour slots are for two people only; either book with a mate or mek a new friend. Sonia will also be showing off her skills with a headline set later in the night. Banging.

Birthdays are always fun. Themed birthday parties are even funnererer. Taking note of the latter is Acoustickle, who’ve decided to host a botanically-themed party up at The Maze to celebrate turning the grand old age of nine. You can catch some cracking live jazz, soul, r‘n’b and reggae from some of the UK’s brightest emerging talent, all in a magical, decorated setting. The likes of Gallery 47, Boadi & The Banku Powers, and Nadia Rae are all on the lineup, plus there’ll be food and desserts, and Gill’s Plant Emporium will be on hand to sort out yer botanical business.

Once again, the Playoff Final weekend is set to be the biggest event of the year for league, and the Panthers are proper buzzing. Fans of ice hockey can mark the end of the season in style, celebrating alongside the Manchester Storm, Guildford Flames, Fife Flyers, Dundee Stars, Edinburgh Capitals, Milton Keynes Lightning, Coventry Blaze, Cardiff Devils, Belfast Giants, Braehead Clan and the Sheffield Steelers. The format of the weekend will be the same as previous years; the semi-finals tekin place on Saturday at 1pm and 5pm and the Grand Final at 4pm on Sunday. Gerron it.

This practical workshop is ideal for gardeners and small scale farmers, but also for anyone looking to up their green game. You’ll learn all about the role and importance of earthworm poo for composting, how to build a DIY worm farm from recycled materials, and how to keep your worms happy. You’ll also receive all of the tools and equipment you need to take your mini worm farm home. The workshop will be delivered by Anna de la Vega, founder of The Urban Worm, who’ll be sure to get you thinking about simple ways to make your life a more sustainable one.
