Shakespeare, Sheafs and Paul Sinha - need we say more?
Comedy of Errors
When: From Thurs 14 July
Where: Various
How much: Free
Is there anything better than watching the work of Shakespeare live on stage? Yes, actually - watching the work of Shakespeare live on an open air stage. And is there anything better than that? Yes - watching the work of Shakespeare live on an open air stage all for free. Thankfully, the Nottingham Shakespeare Company get it, and are bringing this famous play to audiences at venues across the city, including Sneinton Market and Victoria Embankment. They’ll kick things off at St Mary’s Church on Thursday first, though.
Ali Milani - The Unlikely Candidate
When: Thurs 14 July, 7pm
Where: Five Leaves Bookshop
How much: £3 - £12
It’s an… interesting time in politics at the moment. But interesting doesn’t even begin to cover the story of Ali Milani, a rising star who has worked on campaigns for Bernie Sanders and gone toe-to-toe with Boris Johnson in his own constituency. In his new book, The Unlikely Candidate, Milani aims to inspire the next generation of activists, encouraging them to ensure this country avoids slipping into future periods of sleaze, corruption and cover-ups. Hear from him in-person on Thursday and grab a copy for yourself for just £12.
Sheafs
When: Sat 16 July, 6.30pm
Where: Rescue Rooms
How much: £10
Sheafs might be a Sheffield band, but there’s a definite Notts influence in there - with guitarist Chris Goodacre hailing from our part of the world. And in coming to Rescue Rooms this week, Chris and his gang are celebrating the release of their debut album, Happy Medium, in style. Having already supported the likes of Buzzcocks and The Amazons, this post-punk five-piece have a big future ahead of them - head on over to Goldsmith Street to find out why.
Lauren Bush Quartet
When: Sat 16 July, 7.30pm
Where: Peggy’s Skylight
How much: £10 - £15
If you’d like to avoid rocking and/or rolling but would still enjoy a musical night out, Peggy’s Skylight is the place to be. With the Lauren Bush Quartet telling engaging stories through the power of jazz, this is the perfect event for the classier among us. Promising tunes from recently-released album Dream Away, as well as some beloved jazz standards and Canadian songbook classics, expect a mesmerising mix of new and old.
Edinburgh Fringe Previews at Just the Tonic
When: Sat 16 July, 6.45pm
Where: Metronome
How much: £8.80 - £13.20
Fancy some top quality comedy but can’t be arsed to drive hours to Edinburgh? Take a trip to Metronome instead, where you’ll be able to check out some Fringe fellas thanks to Just the Tonic. With everyone’s favourite Chaser (we call him that because he’s from The Chase, not because he’s a stalker), Paul Sinha, taking to the stage, you can expect rib-tickling humour and gut-punching honesty all at once. And if that’s not enough, the Good Kids: Appetite sketch show will round things off with “the most unimportant hour of your life”. Lovely.
We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
