Mulholland Drive, MANIFESTO and Anne-Marie are all in Notts this week...
Big City Reads
When: Until Friday 12 August
Where: Various
How much: Free
Returning once again this year from July to mid-August, Big City Reads is back to hand out free books across the city. Four different books are on offer, selected by Nottingham’s own UNESCO Youth Advisory Board, all aiming to help young people enjoy reading and feel empowered by diving into new worlds.
Stone Soup Academy Presents… Stand Up to Knife Crime
When: Tues 19 July, 7pm
Where: Metronome
How much: Free
With performances from the likes of Jah Digga and Joel Baker, this free event is aiming to highlight issues including knife crime and gang violence. A preview of an upcoming short film directed by Luke Radford will also be shown, commissioned by a Nottingham charity that engages young people at risk of gang culture. An entertaining night fundraising for a great cause, this event is one you won’t want to miss.
MANIFESTO + Live Q&A with Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome
When: Fri 22 July, 6.30pm
Where: Savoy Cinema
How much: £5 - £6.95
MANIFESTO is a film that follows activists campaigning for change in Liverpool, in what is the safest Labour seat in the country. This 2022 Daniel Draper film includes a variety of MPs and will be followed up with a Q&A from Nottingham's (and LeftLion's) own Nadia Whittome. A movie that gives a voice to the working class, capturing the highs and lows of the Corbyn Labour party, this provides a real first-hand look at a vital time in modern politics.
Mulholland Drive + Meshes of the Afternoon
When: Sat 23 Jul, 6.30pm
Where: Broadway Cinema
How much: £5 - £10
David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive is a surrealist cult classic that everyone has to see at least once. Meshes of the Afternoon is a short experimental film released almost sixty years prior. Yet both depict Hollywood in nightmarish ways. A rare double-bill screening will take place at Broadway Cinema on Saturday - and with tickets as cheap as £5, why not head on over for a unique night out?
Splendour Festival 2022
When: Sat 23 July - Sun 24 July
Where: Wollaton Park
How much: From £46
Over forty acts across five stages, this weekend is set to be a blast over at Wollaton Park. There’s something for everyone - with chart-topping acts ranging from Richard Ashcroft to Craig David, Anne-Marie to The Human League, as well as a silent disco and funfair. With day tickets ranging from £46 for a Nottingham resident and up to £85 for a weekend ticket, kick off the summer holidays the right way this Saturday and Sunday.
We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
