Inspire Poetry Festival

Inspire Poetry Festival is back for 2023, with just over a week of fantastic events celebrating the power of words. Take your pick from exhibitions, workshops, screenings and (of course) some great performances for both children and adults.

Wheatus @ Rescue Rooms

Where: Rescue Rooms

Yes, it may be coming up to 20 years old, but there can be no denying that the millennium hit, Teenage Dirtbag still hits as hard today. (A recent TikTok trend, using the familiar chorus showed us just that, with the likes of Madonna and Bon Jovi getting involved!) After a reignition of popularity, Wheatus have been on tour for the last two years at many high profile events. Grab your bucket hats, because they will be gracing Nottingham for the night. The six-piece band, have re-released and expanded their debut album, with ‘lost’ songs from over the years. If you’re looking for a fun night, this is it.

Shoot The Duck Roller Disco

Where: Sneinton Market Avenues
How much: £10-£15

For one-night-only, Shoot The Duck, an 18+ roller disco, returns to Nottingham and you don’t want to miss this! The Avenues will be taken over, complete with an illuminated dance floor, and music provided from Nottingham’s finest DJ’s. 

Newbie’s should not fear, skates are available to hire for a small fee, and this year will have a dedicated zone for beginners, complete with handy stewards! Plus for your mates that don’t want to skate, don’t fret. There will be a variety of local food and drink stalls, so they can sit back in the Plaza, chill with some good food and watch the fun.

Open Source Investigation Comes of Age: by Eliot Higgins of Bellingcat
When: Wednesday 20th September
Where: Nottingham Contemporary
How much: Free

“In an age of disinformation, how can we hope to discover the truth?” Join Eliot in a 45 minute informative lecture that will offer insight into how to navigate the claims, and counterclaims related to the war in Ukraine. It is free for all to attend, and will be followed by a Q&A session and drinks.

Queer Like Funny: An LGBTQ+ Comedy Cabaret
When: Thursday 21st September
Where: The Lord Roberts
How much: £8 

Be prepared for a night of laughs, with Nottingham’s finest LGBTQ+ performers. Everyone is welcome, no matter their sexuality, what they’re wearing (yes, you can come in your comfies)! In The Lord Roberts’ words, come and have fun, “get pumped and have a gay ol’ time!”

Bats

Bat Walk at Attenborough Nature Reserve

When: Friday 22nd September
Where: Attenborough Nature Centre
How much: £20

Join conservation biologist Angela Efstathiou, who specialises in bats, on a guided walk. Upon arrival you’ll be greeted with light refreshments, whilst hearing an introductory talk before heading out. Animal lovers and those with a sense of curiosity are sure to enjoy this one. Swap your Friday night out for this unique event; you even have the opportunity to learn how to use bat detectors - I’m in!

Broadway Sunday Social: Brunch, Chat and Cards

When: Sunday 24th September
Where: Broadway Cinema
How much: Free

This fortnightly get together is something a little different for your Sunday, plus it’s free. A wholesome morning for people to come and have a chat, play some cards and meet new friends. All of which takes place in a LeftLion HQ favourite venue, you can even nip to cinema once you’re done!
