There's a lot to do this week in Nottingham, with a classic film shown in 35mm at the Savoy and local institution the Television Workshop showcasing a play about Notts County FC, among other options. Here's a few things we think are worth doing.
'I Had A Wheelbarrow' - a play by the Television Workshop
When: Mon 15 June
Where: The Nest
How much: £5 - £8
Legendary local institution The Television Workshop has created a new play which should be a great experience for any Notts person, even those with just a passing interest in football. I Had A Wheelbarrow is a play about Notts County FC, set entirely in Meadow Lane during a 90 minute match, exploring themes of family and community. It’s happening at The Nest, which is the club’s, still relatively young, dedicated fanzone and a versatile multi-purpose venue. The live cast are Workshop members aged between 11 and 40, and there’s some famous faces involved too like Vicky McClure, Joe Dempsie, Michael Socha, Aisling Loftus and Shane Meadows.
Enter The Dragon - 35mm Presentation
When: Mon 15 June
Where: The Savoy Cinema
How much: £8 (concessions from £5.50)
A special 35mm screening of the 1973 martial arts classic that made Bruce Lee an international icon. Enter The Dragon follows martial arts master Lee as he is recruited by British intelligence to infiltrate the remote island fortress of a mysterious crime lord named Han. Working undercover, Lee must navigate dangerous waters whilst confronting his own demons and uncovering Han's criminal operations. The film is packed with legendary martial arts sequences including the "boards don't hit back" lesson, epic nunchaku battles against Han's guards and that brutal underground mirror room showdown. A rare opportunity to experience this influential action film in its original 35mm format.
When: Wed 17 June
Where: The Grove
How much: £8.80
This gig is organised by LeftLion music co-editor Phil Taylor, in association with the excellent blog he manages in his spare time: Music Observer. The night's headliner is India Arkin, a Bristol singer songwriter, who draws inspiration from some great indie acts like Alice Phoebe Lou and Men I Trust, and with this gig makes her Nottingham debut. Support comes from two fantastic local acts: Dring and Emily Ashberry. Go check this out (we can vouch for Phil's excellent curation skills) !
The Nottingham Rainbow Quarter Opening
When: Wednesday 17 June
Where: The Hockley area
How much: Free
This Wednesday will see a big moment in our city's cultural history, as the Nottingham Rainbow Quarter: a designated official LGBTQ+ friendly area in the vein of Manchester's Gay Village, is set to be opened. It's a project that's been spearheaded by Sam Harvey, who co-directs trans advocacy group the Nottingham Pastel Project, and will see plaques and signage installed to reflect it. It should be a great atmosphere; head down to celebrate the changes!
Nottingham Craft Beer Festival
When: Fri 19 June - Sat 20 June
Where: Sneinton Market Avenues
How much: £12 - £20
It’s that time of year again, when arts and independents hub Sneinton Market hosts the Nottingham Craft Beer Festival. It’s set to be a good one, with some great East Midlands breweries such as Blue Monkey, Neon Raptor, Bang the Elephant, and Emperors, returning to the festival with favourites from further afield, like Northern Monk, Brew York, Little Earth Project, and Siren. There’s also some new names this year, like Trappist brewery Tynt Meadow and Loch Lomond, who are coming down from Dumbarton, Scotland. As always, there’ll be plenty of excellent live music from local artists and street food as well. Don’t miss it!

We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
